Skimming the Pool Surface

Field checklist

A concise reminder for a trained technician. Use the full procedure for first-time work or unusual conditions.

Complete in order

  1. Read the movement of the surface.
  2. Establish safe pole control.
  3. Make smooth overlapping passes.
  4. Manage the load.
  5. Finish the detail zones.
  6. Verify and clean up.

Done when

  • No material floating debris remains in accessible pool or spa surface zones under the current weather conditions.
  • Debris was removed from the property or placed in the approved receptacle without staining the deck or contaminating another area.

Skimming removes material before it sinks, stains, decomposes, consumes sanitizer, blocks a basket, or reaches the filter. The technique should be fast, controlled, and complete without turning the net, pole, or circulation system into a source of damage.

This SOP covers routine floating debris. Heavy submerged debris belongs to the leaf-rake or vacuum procedure. Hazardous or unusual contamination belongs to the applicable safety response.

Why this matters

Leaves, blossoms, insects, ash, dust clumps, toys, and landscaping material do more than affect appearance. Debris can restrict a skimmer or pump basket, increase filter loading, lodge in a cleaner, stain a surface, and add organic demand to the water.

Timing matters. Material that is easy to lift while floating may become slower and more abrasive to remove after it waterlogs and sinks. A deliberate first pass also prevents later brushing from scattering floating material across a surface that was nearly clean.

Skimming is an observation task as well as a cleaning task. A repeating band of debris may follow wind and return flow. Material concentrated at one end may be normal for the property, or it may signal changed skimmer draw, a stopped pump, a moved return fitting, a stuck gate, roof runoff, nearby construction, or a cover problem.

Before you begin

Complete the arrival and as-found inspection before changing the surface. Check whether anyone is using the pool or spa, whether a cover or water feature changes access, and whether wind is actively replacing debris faster than it can be removed.

Classify the debris before handling it. Routine leaves and insects are different from broken glass, a sharp object, bodily material, a dead animal, oily residue, a chemical container, or unknown powder. Do not sweep a hazardous object into a routine debris bag.

Inspect the pole and net:

  • the pole sections are straight and the adjustment lock holds;
  • the grip and exposed edges are not sharp;
  • the net frame is not cracked or able to scratch the finish;
  • the mesh is intact and clean enough not to release debris or contamination;
  • the attachment is secure and will not separate over the water.

Adjust the pole only as long as needed for the current reach. Excess length increases leverage, fatigue, loss of control, contact with landscaping, and the chance of striking an overhead object or person.

Choose an approved debris destination before the net is full. Do not dump wet leaves on a customer's deck, lawn, planter, roof drain, or chemical area unless the property instruction expressly identifies that location.

Detailed procedure

1. Read the movement of the surface

Stand where glare is manageable and look across the water rather than only down at it. Identify the wind direction, active returns, skimmer draw, spillover, negative edge, steps, corners, and the zones where debris naturally collects.

Plan a route that avoids walking repeatedly around the same wet area. When practical, begin on the upwind or lower-load side and work toward the larger collection zone. If the pump is operating, use existing surface movement without deliberately feeding a heavy load into the skimmer.

2. Establish safe pole control

Hold the pole with two controlled contact points and keep the working end in view. Be aware of fences, glass, overhead conductors, branches, furniture, people, and fragile edge details before extending or turning.

Do not rest the pole where it can roll, fall into the water, block a walkway, or contact a chemical container. When changing position, shorten or control the pole rather than swinging the long end behind you.

3. Make smooth overlapping passes

Place the net slightly ahead of the debris with the opening facing the direction of travel. Submerge the leading edge just enough to guide floating material into the mesh. Move smoothly; a fast plunge can push light material away or drive it below the net.

Overlap passes so a narrow strip is not repeatedly missed. Follow the surface shape around steps, benches, tanning ledges, coves, raised spas, spillways, and corners. Keep the frame away from plaster, tile, vinyl, fiberglass, cover tracks, sealant joints, lights, and fittings.

At the end of a pass, lift or rotate the leading edge to retain the catch before reversing. Dragging the net backward with the opening exposed often releases the same debris that was just collected.

4. Manage the load

Empty the net before wet debris makes it difficult to control, tears the mesh, bends the frame, drips across the deck, or spills back into the pool. A series of manageable loads is faster than recovering one overloaded net.

Shake or invert routine debris only into the approved container. Do not strike the frame against coping, pavement, a wall, a waste bin, or equipment. Use a controlled hand method with suitable gloves if material remains caught; never reach blindly into leaves where a sharp object, insect, or animal may be hidden.

If the load is unusually heavy, reassess whether the flat net is still the correct tool. Waterlogged leaves or a large quantity below the surface generally requires a leaf rake or vacuum workflow that accounts for surface protection and circulation.

5. Finish the detail zones

Make a deliberate final pass at:

  1. each skimmer opening and the water immediately beside it;
  2. steps, benches, ledges, and entry shelves;
  3. corners and behind ladders or handrails that can be reached without forcing the tool;
  4. the raised-spa surface and spillway edges;
  5. water-feature catch areas and cover edges that are safely accessible.

Do not insert the net into active suction plumbing, force it under a cover, or use it to pry a stuck weir, cleaner, fitting, or object.

6. Verify and clean up

Allow ripples to settle, then inspect from at least two positions. Low-angle light often reveals floating material that disappears when viewed straight down. Compare the finished surface with current conditions: a windy visit may have a few newly arriving particles, but it should not have untouched zones or a remaining material load.

Check that the skimmer opening was not intentionally overloaded during the work. If the procedure or work order includes basket service, complete it through the applicable basket SOP rather than reaching into the skimmer casually.

Dispose of debris, remove drips or stains created by the work, rinse and sanitize the tool when the debris or property condition requires it, collapse and secure the pole, and record exceptions.

Common problems

Random passes

Moving wherever a leaf catches the eye creates extra walking and repeatedly disturbs cleaned water. Read the flow and use an overlapping route.

Chasing debris too quickly

Fast strokes create a bow wave that pushes light debris away. Lead the debris and move the net smoothly beneath it.

Overfilling the net

An overloaded net becomes heavy, spills, tears, and drips. Empty earlier and protect both the technician and the tool.

Scraping the finish

The frame is not a brush or pry tool. Maintain water clearance from surfaces and use the correct task-specific tool for attached material.

Sending everything into the skimmer

Surface circulation assists routine collection, but directing a sudden heavy debris load into the skimmer can block flow and move work downstream into baskets and the filter. Lift large material out.

Ignoring what the debris means

Ash, roof granules, mulch, animal material, plaster chips, glass, or repeated debris from one source may require a property, runoff, contamination, construction, or equipment follow-up. Record the pattern rather than treating every catch as ordinary leaves.

Major stop conditions

Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.

  • Lightning, severe wind, unsafe heat, unstable footing, a damaged deck, an electrical hazard, or another environmental condition makes pole work unsafe.
  • Broken glass, needles, sharps, fecal material, vomit, blood, dead animals, unknown chemicals, oil, or another unusual contaminant is present.
  • An automatic cover, cover track, water feature, edge detail, or fragile finish could be damaged by the planned access or tool path.
  • The pole, cam lock, handle, or net is broken, sharp, contaminated, or cannot be controlled.
