Tablet Feeders and In-Line Sanitizer Systems
Identify what belongs in an in-line feeder, how it connects to the plumbing, and why fumes, pressure, residue, and incompatible products demand tight control.

- Exact feeder and approved contents are proven by manual and original labeled product; unknown or incompatible material has not been combined.
- Plumbing, backflow protection, flow/runtime, setting and water-chemistry result are documented, with heater/equipment protected as the exact manual requires.
An in-line or off-line feeder intentionally creates a concentrated sanitizer environment. The feeder may hold slow-dissolving trichlor or bromine tablets, while other specialized systems may be designed for a different single product.
The wrong chemical, a contaminated tool, a small amount of water in dry concentrated product, or an unsafe opening can produce heat, fire, explosion or toxic corrosive gas.
Fast orientation

1. Feeder families
In-line erosion feeder
Installed directly in the return plumbing. Water flows through or around approved tablets, and treated water returns downstream.
Off-line erosion feeder
Connected by small inlet/outlet tubing that diverts some circulation through a separate feeder body. Tubing, check valves and injection points are part of the safety/performance system.
Specialty feeders
Some devices are specifically designed/labeled for one form of calcium hypochlorite, bromine or another registered product. Their components and procedures differ.
Never use a specialty feeder based on generic “chlorine feeder” language. The exact device label and manual determine the only acceptable chemical.
2. Chemical identity is a hard gate
Before adding anything, match all of these:
- feeder manufacturer/model;
- feeder label/manual approved active ingredient and form;
- original chemical container;
- EPA registration and product directions where applicable;
- current SDS;
- your company's property record of prior contents;
- clean, dry, dedicated tool identity.
If any part conflicts or is unknown, do not add.
Tablets can look similar. Never identify trichlor, bromine, calcium hypochlorite or an unknown product by color, size, imprint, smell or how it dissolves.
3. Never combine concentrated sanitizer forms
Do not mix:
- trichlor with calcium hypochlorite;
- bromine tablets with calcium hypochlorite;
- one chlorine formulation with another unless a product/feeder system explicitly requires it under its exact procedure;
- new product with unknown, dirty or degraded remnants;
- sanitizer with acid, algaecide, oil/grease, organic debris or cleanup waste;
- feeder contents with floor sweepings, rags or another spill.
Incompatible concentrated chemicals can react violently even though each is routinely used in diluted pool water.
Never “rinse out” an unknown reacting feeder as an improvised response. Isolate and call emergency/specialist resources.
4. Recognize a chemical emergency
From a safe distance, stop for:
- strong chlorine/bromine or unknown chemical odor;
- visible vapor/fume;
- coughing, burning eyes/throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness or nausea;
- heat, sweating, discoloration or deformation of feeder;
- swollen cap/body, hissing or pressure;
- smoke, flame or melted material;
- wet concentrated tablets, foreign granules or mixed colors/forms;
- crystalline deposits around cap, tubing or valves;
- active concentrated leak.
Move people to fresh air/upwind and use emergency services/poison control/first-response plan as the product and condition require. Do not become a second victim trying to carry the feeder outside.
5. Verify plumbing and equipment protection
Many representative tablet feeders require placement after the filter, heater and other equipment so highly chlorinated, low-pH or corrosive solution does not flow backward through them.
Trace:
- PUMP/FILTER/HEATER sequence;
- feeder inlet and outlet;
- flow arrows;
- external control valve;
- check valve(s);
- tubing condition and fittings;
- injection point;
- pool or spa return valves;
- solar/cleaner/feature branches;
- elevation relative to water level;
- drain or isolation provisions.
Confirm the exact manual's metal/copper restrictions and check-valve requirements. A check valve is not permanent protection; document evidence of leakage, corrosion or off-cycle drain-back.
6. Output is driven by water and operation
Tablet dissolution/feed rate can change with:
- control-valve setting;
- water flow and pressure differential;
- pump speed and runtime;
- tablet size/form and surface area;
- water temperature;
- feeder water level/design;
- pool or spa mode;
- blockage, air or scale in tubing/valve;
- product age/condition.
The dial is not a chlorine measurement. “3” on one feeder is not comparable to “3” on another property.
Base adjustments on measured FC/CC, pH, CYA, pool volume, actual runtime and demand. Trichlor adds CYA and is acidic in use; long-term feed must be evaluated in the full chemistry plan.
7. As-found inspection without opening
Record:
- body, cap, threads/lock, unions and drain condition;
- sight window/visible contents only where the design permits;
- setting and stop/scale condition;
- tubing brittleness, cracks, discoloration or leaks;
- check-valve orientation and deposits;
- moisture/crystals around joints;
- corrosion on nearby heater, valve, metal or electrical equipment;
- odor/heat from a safe exterior position;
- pump state/flow and whether feeder appears to drain/fill as designed;
- current water chemistry.
Do not loosen a cap or line to “check pressure.” Do not put your face over a cap.
8. Opening and recharging boundary
Use the separate approved procedure and exact manual. Core controls include:
- prove chemical identity and compatible product before approaching with product;
- stop pump/timers/automation and prevent restart as specified;
- close feeder control/isolation valves in the exact sequence;
- drain/relieve only through the designed path into a clean compatible container;
- stand to the side, keep face away and open slowly only when the manual permits;
- do not inhale vapors;
- inspect for heat, contamination, unknown remnants or damaged seal;
- add only clean, dry approved tablets with dedicated clean/dry tools;
- never pack, crush or force tablets unless the product/feeder label explicitly directs it;
- use only exact approved seal and lubricant, never oil or grease;
- close/lock exactly;
- restart and restore the recorded setting;
- inspect every line/valve/union for leak and verify correct flow.
If the cap resists, the seal is damaged, contents are wet/unknown, or fumes/heat are abnormal, stop.
9. Product labels control use
Sanitizer products that control microorganisms are EPA-registered pesticides. The label is the legal use direction and defines:
- approved sites;
- active ingredient/concentration;
- dosing/feed directions;
- hazards and PPE;
- first aid;
- storage/disposal;
- incompatibilities;
- emergency contact.
The Playbook does not replace the label. Photograph/record the exact product used; do not decant into an unlabeled container for route convenience.
10. Relationship to shock and other treatments
Never add shock, algaecide or another treatment to the feeder. Before a separate pool treatment:
- read both product labels and feeder manual;
- determine whether the feeder must be shut off or tablets removed under an authorized process;
- keep products/tools physically separate;
- add each only by its own pool procedure;
- confirm granules are fully dissolved and required conditions are met before restoring feeder;
- document the sequence.
Chemicals can be compatible only after proper separate dilution in the full pool volume. That does not make concentrated products compatible in a feeder or bucket.
11. Common operating problems
Sanitizer too high
Confirm testing, pool or spa volume, feeder setting, pump runtime, tablet load, valve/check-valve behavior and off-cycle siphon/backflow. Close/adjust only as the manual permits; do not open a full feeder casually.
Sanitizer too low
Check demand, CYA/sunlight, algae, runtime/flow, tablets, blockage, setting, tubing/check valve and test accuracy. Filling the feeder may not correct failed flow.
Feeder remains full or tablets do not dissolve
Possible inadequate flow/pressure differential, closed/blocked control valve, air lock, incorrect plumbing, unsuitable tablet/form, low temperature or check-valve/tubing fault. Do not probe with an improvised tool.
Corrosion near equipment
Check feeder placement, check valve, off-cycle backflow, leaks/fumes and water chemistry. Restrict a hazardous feeder and refer; cleaning visible corrosion is not correction.
Cap or body leak
Stop under the manual. Chemical concentration may be high. Do not tighten under pressure or substitute a seal/lubricant.
12. Chemical-specific tools and storage
Maintain separate labeled:
- gloves as required by process;
- scoop/tongs/funnel;
- bucket/drain container;
- spill supplies;
- storage area/bin where permitted.
Keep tools clean and completely dry before contact with dry product. Store original containers closed, upright, cool, dry and ventilated as the label directs, separated from incompatible chemicals and protected from rain, irrigation and leaks.
Never store acid or liquid chemicals above dry sanitizer. Do not store pool chemicals against the feeder, heater or electrical equipment.
13. Qualified/emergency boundary
This guide does not authorize:
- opening a hot, swollen, fuming, pressurized or unknown feeder;
- mixing, neutralizing or transferring unknown product;
- cleaning an incompatible contamination incident;
- plumbing/check-valve repair under pressure;
- reusing contaminated tools/containers;
- changing the feeder to another active ingredient;
- emergency response without training/equipment;
- disposing of reactive/unknown waste in trash, drain or pool.
Common mistakes
- Identifying tablets by appearance.
- Using the same scoop or bucket for different products.
- Opening the cap to count tablets during every visit.
- Standing over the cap.
- Using oil/grease or an unapproved seal lubricant.
- Adding shock or algaecide through the feeder.
- Treating the dial as an FC reading.
- Ignoring CYA accumulation from trichlor.
- Ignoring downstream placement and check-valve failure.
- Rinsing unknown remnants into the pool.
Major stop conditions
Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.
- Unknown prior/current chemical, dirty/mixed/discolored/wet product, foreign debris, incompatible tool/container, loss of original label/SDS, or any suggestion calcium hypochlorite entered a trichlor/bromine feeder (or vice versa).
- Fumes/strong odor, heat, swollen body/lid, hissing, pressure, smoke/fire, crystallization, leaking concentrated solution, damaged body/cap/thread/union/tubing/valve, or symptoms of exposure.
- Feeder/plumbing identity or pressure-relief process is unknown; pump/automatic restart cannot be controlled; water cannot be isolated/drained as manual requires; or opening would expose face/body to trapped gas/liquid.
- Check valve/backflow protection is missing/failed/unknown, feeder is upstream or incompatible with heater/metal/plumbing, or control valve/line is blocked/seized/leaking.
