Water Clarity and Appearance Standard
Judge water clarity and appearance through observable evidence, including visibility, color, suspended material, surface film, use restrictions, and operating support.
Acceptance check
Use these points to determine whether the documented BlueLux standard has been met.
Verify the outcome
- View still water from multiple normal deck positions after managing glare; confirm the deepest floor, suction covers, steps, benches, fittings.
- Classify separately: clarity, color, suspended particles, surface film or foam, attached growth or stain, and settled debris.
- Compare the pool and a clean white-background water sample with the same property's documented baseline, recent work, weather, source water, chemistry, and equipment state.
- Restrict use when the bottom, suction covers, steps, people, or hazards are not plainly visible, or when contamination, reaction, or electrical danger is present.
- Trace likely causes across chemistry, circulation, filtration, debris, treatment sequence, source water, finish, lighting, environment, and equipment before selecting a corrective SOP.
- Classify the visit as acceptable, conditionally acceptable with no-use restriction and active correction, or unacceptable and escalated; appearance alone never proves sanitary water.
- Photograph honestly from repeatable angles without filters, selective framing, or waiting only for the most favorable light.
Done when
- The deepest floor and suction-outlet area, all steps and benches, and submerged safety-relevant features are plainly visible from normal viewing positions in still water.
- Water color and visible material are either consistent with the documented acceptable baseline or accurately classified with a corrective path and use status.
This standard answers one question: What must be observable before your company calls pool or spa water visually acceptable?
“Blue,” “sparkling,” and “looks much better” are not enough. Blue dye can hide cloudiness. Clear water can be green from metals or growth. A clean-looking pool can have inadequate disinfectant, an unsafe suction cover, or contamination that cannot be seen.
Your company judges visibility, color, visible material, water condition, equipment support, and safety as separate layers.
The non-negotiable visibility gate
In still water with normal features and aeration off, a technician must be able to see plainly:
- the deepest floor area;
- all suction-outlet covers and their visible condition;
- steps, benches, ledges, transitions, and changes in depth;
- lights, fittings, cleaner components, and submerged obstacles;
- a person or object anywhere in the pool or spa.
View from more than one normal deck position because sun angle, glare, finish pattern, depth, shadow, and cover position can create false confidence.
If any safety-relevant area cannot be seen, classify the water unacceptable, instruct that no one enter, and begin the diagnostic or escalation path. Do not use a pole, foot, swimmer, or underwater camera to prove that the bottom is present.
Six separate observations
1. Clarity
Clarity describes how well light and detail pass through the water. Record:
- sharp, slightly hazy, hazy, cloudy, opaque, or localized obscuration;
- whether features remain crisp at the deepest point;
- whether the condition is uniform or concentrated near returns, steps, a spa, a feature, or the floor;
- whether stilling the water changes the observation.
Do not let bubbles from spa jets, a running spillway, or active brushing masquerade as turbidity. Turn off optional turbulence safely and allow it to dissipate before the acceptance view.
2. Color
Color may come from growth, metals, source water, chemicals, debris, finish, lighting, sky reflection, or an introduced dye. Compare:
- the pool or spa from repeatable positions;
- a clean transparent sample against a white background;
- the same property's documented normal appearance;
- shallow and deep zones under similar light.
State the color observed, green, yellow-green, brown, tea-colored, gray, milky, blue-green, not the assumed cause.
3. Suspended material
Identify visible particles that remain in the water column:
- fine dust or filter media;
- dead growth after treatment;
- pollen or organic fragments;
- precipitated calcium or metal compounds;
- air bubbles;
- construction or surface material;
- unknown material.
Record whether particles settle, float, follow return flow, increase after brushing, or appear downstream of equipment. Do not diagnose by appearance alone.
4. Surface film, foam, and floating material
Distinguish:
- ordinary new leaves or insects;
- pollen bands;
- persistent foam;
- oily or iridescent film;
- scum at the waterline;
- chemical residue;
- contamination.
An oil-like sheen, unexpected persistent foam, chemical odor, or unknown film is a stop condition until classified.
5. Attached color or damage
Stain, scale, growth, mottling, etching, plaster variation, exposed aggregate, rust, or shadow on a surface can make clear water appear discolored.
Use multiple views and a water sample before labeling the water itself. Do not scrub aggressively or add chemical simply to test a theory; move to the finish-compatible diagnostic procedure.
6. Settled debris
Leaves, dirt, dead algae, filter media, or construction debris on the floor is a cleaning condition unless it obscures hazards or indicates contamination. Record whether the material is removable, attached, newly arriving, or too extensive to clean safely under the current water visibility.
Acceptance classifications
Acceptable
Use acceptable only when:
- every safety-relevant submerged feature is plainly visible;
- water is free of unexplained discoloration, objectionable film, persistent foam, and material suspended at a level that affects use or indicates an unresolved process;
- visible debris and attached conditions meet the cleaning standard or have a non-safety exception;
- chemistry, circulation, filtration, sanitation, contamination, and physical-safety checks independently pass;
- photographs and measurements represent the real condition.
Conditionally acceptable, no use
Use this temporary classification when the cause and corrective path are controlled but water is not yet ready for normal use, for example, expected haze after an authorized treatment, suspended fine material being filtered, or a documented startup process.
Requirements:
- no one enters the water;
- the mechanism is supported by evidence, not a guess;
- filtration, circulation, chemistry, and equipment are verified;
- the treatment has a specific retest point and owner;
- the condition is not worsening;
- all safety and contamination questions are resolved or separately escalated.
“Conditionally acceptable” never means safe enough to swim. It means the corrective state is controlled while the water remains closed.
Unacceptable and escalated
Use unacceptable and escalated when:
- the visibility gate fails;
- color, film, foam, odor, or material is unknown or suggests contamination or reaction;
- chemistry, circulation, filtration, sanitation, or equipment cannot be verified;
- the condition is worsening, recurring, or inconsistent with the proposed cause;
- an electrical, suction, structural, chemical, or contamination hazard is hidden by the water;
- evidence is insufficient for an honest classification.
Diagnostic sequence
Do not begin with “add shock.” Use a controlled sequence:
- Protect: restrict use when the visibility or hazard gate fails.
- Preserve: photograph before brushing, dosing, backwashing, or changing equipment.
- Classify: clarity, color, suspended material, surface condition, attached condition, and settled debris.
- Test: obtain representative chemistry with a valid method, including free chlorine or bromine, pH, alkalinity, hardness, CYA, salt, temperature, and condition-specific tests.
- Trace flow: confirm water level, pump, valves, speed, return action, filter pressure against baseline, sanitizer, cleaner, and shared spa or feature paths.
- Review history: recent dose, product change, brushing, filter service, backwash, rain, fill water, bather event, landscaping, construction, cover, outage, or repair.
- Choose one next path: cleaning, filtration, chemistry, metal or scale evaluation, contamination response, equipment diagnostic, source-water check, or qualified referral.
- Define acceptance: specify the reading, visibility, time, and photograph required at retest.
Changing several things at once may improve the water while destroying the evidence needed to prevent recurrence.
Photograph standard
For material conditions, capture:
- a wide view from the same repeatable property position;
- the deepest floor or suction-outlet view;
- a second angle that controls for glare;
- a close and orientation view of localized color, film, debris, or attached material;
- a white-background sample when color is disputed;
- relevant equipment readings and chemistry results.
Do not use filters, boosted saturation, portrait blur, selective crop, or an angle that intentionally hides the deep end. Record lighting, feature operation, and whether the water was still.
Common classification errors
- Clear but green: may be metal, growth, lighting, dye, or surface color; clear does not mean acceptable.
- Blue but cloudy: color does not pass the visibility gate.
- Cloud after brushing: may be suspended material, but the water remains no-use until visibility returns and the cause is controlled.
- Bubbles from returns: may indicate air, not turbidity; investigate the hydraulic cause.
- White cloud after chemistry: may be precipitation or incompatible sequencing; stop indiscriminate dosing.
- Brown after fill or rain: may involve source water, metals, soil, runoff, or organic load; classify before treating.
- Haze only at night: lighting can expose particles not obvious by day; reproduce and document rather than dismiss it.
- Stained finish: water may be clear while the surface is discolored; use the surface path.
Major stop conditions
Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.
- The deepest floor, suction covers, steps, benches, a person, a tool, or another submerged hazard cannot be plainly seen from normal deck viewing positions.
- Feces, vomit, blood, dead animal, sewage, chemical spill, glass, sharp, unknown material, or suspected harmful growth is present.
- A chemical reaction, excessive dose, incompatible contact, strong odor, gas, heat, or recent treatment makes observation or entry unsafe.
- A suction cover, light, electrical component, structure, step, floor, or other safety feature cannot be inspected because of visibility.

- We separate clarity from color and cleanliness. Clear green water, blue cloudy water, stained plaster, floating pollen, and suspended filter dust are different conditions.
- We use repeatable visibility targets and photographs instead of adjectives such as crystal clear, sparkling, or a little cloudy.

Document before leaving
- As-found and completion views from at least two repeatable positions, including the deepest floor or suction-outlet area and any localized exception
- Water state under still conditions, glare and lighting limits, depth, color against a white background, suspended particles, surface film or foam, attached material, settled debris, and odor without deliberate inhalation
- Free chlorine or bromine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, CYA, salt, temperature, metals or other tests relevant to the observed condition, with method and time
- Pump mode and speed, flow evidence, filter pressure against baseline, valve state, return action, cleaner, sanitizer, recent filter or chemical work, rain, wind, source water, bather load, and cover state
- Acceptance classification, immediate no-use instruction when applicable, suspected mechanism versus confirmed cause, corrective SOP, retest criteria, customer notice, photographs, and accountable owner
