A control procedure for identifying, calculating, staging, and adding one approved dry pool chemical by its own label without moisture, dust, residue, or incompatible mixing.

Field checklist

A concise reminder for a trained technician. Use the full procedure for first-time work or unusual conditions.

Complete in order

  1. Calculate with the exact formulation.
  2. Perform the independent check.

  5. Measure by the required unit.
  6. Apply only by the exact label method.
  7. Stop on abnormal behavior.
  8. Secure product, tools, and residue.
  9. Circulate, inspect, and retest.

Done when

  • The exact dry product and actual amount are traceable to a valid result, verified pool or spa, checked calculation, controlling label and SDS, and documented treatment objective.
  • The product was added without moisture entry, dust exposure, spill, incompatible contact, fire, heat, fumes, concentrated surface contact, or uncontrolled access.

This is not one application recipe. It is the control procedure that must be completed before the exact label method for one approved dry product.

Dry pool chemicals can look similar while behaving very differently. Calcium hypochlorite, dichlor, trichlor, monopersulfate, sodium bisulfate, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride, cyanuric acid, sodium thiosulfate, and specialty products have different hazards, side effects, tools, doses, and application methods.

Never identify a dry chemical only as “shock,” “tabs,” “pH up,” “alkalinity,” “hardness,” “stabilizer,” or by granule color. Read the original label.

Why this matters

EPA's pool-chemical safety alert explains that water wetting a product or inadvertently mixing incompatible materials can trigger heat, fire, explosion, or toxic vapor. Chlorine-releasing oxidizers, including calcium hypochlorite and chlorinated isocyanurates, are especially reactive. A damp scoop, dirty bucket, drink spill, oily rag, acid residue, or remnants from another chlorine product can initiate an incident before the product is applied.

The water consequences also differ:

  • cal-hypo adds chlorine and calcium;
  • dichlor and trichlor add chlorine and CYA and affect pH differently;
  • monopersulfate oxidizes but can interfere with combined-chlorine testing;
  • sodium bisulfate lowers pH and TA and may add sulfate;
  • soda ash raises pH and can raise TA;
  • sodium bicarbonate primarily raises TA while also affecting pH;
  • calcium chloride raises CH and releases substantial heat when dissolving;
  • CYA raises stabilizer and changes chlorine behavior;
  • sodium thiosulfate lowers chlorine and can create under-sanitized water if overused.

A correct dose of the wrong product can solve one number while damaging the sanitation, balance, surface, heater, salt cell, cover, or future service plan.

If the product does not fit an approved entry and treatment objective, do not use this general SOP as authorization.

Validate the treatment

Confirm:

  • representative valid starting test and method range;
  • exact target or staged target from the correct decision standard;
  • pool, spa, connected or isolated mode, and verified volume;
  • pH, TA, CH, CYA, salt, temperature, sanitizer, saturation, and surface factors affected by the product;
  • recent chemical additions, contamination, fill, drain, rain, cover, feeder, salt-cell, heater, and homeowner treatment;
  • actual circulation and label-approved application location;
  • required separation, brushing, dissolution, reentry, and retest.

Do not use a dry chlorine product merely because FC is low. Identify why FC is low, how CYA and calcium will change, whether a recent liquid dose has mixed, and whether the result could be bleached out.

Inspect the package and storage history

Read the complete label and SDS. Confirm product, manufacturer, active ingredient, concentration or purity, hydration or formulation, EPA registration when applicable, package size, lot or date when consequential, use directions, PPE, incompatibilities, and disposal.

Reject a container that is wet, hot, swollen, discolored, mixed, contaminated, leaking, crusted across the closure, unlabeled, decanted, or has been stored with incompatible liquids above it.

Do not open a product that may be decomposing. Isolate the area, protect people, and use the emergency plan; do not carry a hot or swollen container through the property.

Detailed procedure

1. Calculate with the exact formulation

Use Calculating and Adding Pool Chemicals and the product-specific calculator or label table.

Required inputs include:

  • valid starting result and approved target;
  • verified receiving volume;
  • exact active ingredient, percentage or purity, and formulation;
  • mass or volume unit required by the method;
  • label application and maximum-dose limits;
  • the product's secondary effects and current water balance;
  • the approved staged cap.

Check the formulation carefully. Anhydrous and hydrated calcium chloride do not have the same active fraction. Two dichlor, cal-hypo, dry-acid, or balance products may differ in percentage. Package weight is not active-ingredient weight.

2. Perform the independent check

Before opening the container, verify:

  1. Direction: Does the active ingredient move the intended parameter correctly?
  2. Identity: Does the physical container match every calculator selection?
  3. Units: Is the output mass, dry volume, liquid volume, or package count? Are ounces by weight being confused with fluid ounces?
  4. Magnitude: Is the amount plausible for the pool or spa and the size of the correction?
  5. Label: Is the use, dose, frequency, and application within the exact label?
  6. Side effects: How much chlorine, CYA, calcium, pH, TA, salt, sulfate, or other material will be added or removed?
  7. Compatibility: Are recent additions, feeder contents, surface, equipment, cover, and application path compatible?
  8. Verification: Can the expected final result be measured within the test range?

Stop if an extreme dose, small spa, uncertain volume, new formulation, or surprising output cannot be independently reconciled.

3. Prepare a dry, controlled handling zone

Keep people and pets away. Establish ventilation and position upwind. Protect the product from rain, splash, sprinklers, wet deck, hoses, condensation, and damp gloves.

Secure every other chemical before staging this one. Remove fuels, oils, rags, leaves, drinks, food, cleaners, acids, bases, and organic debris from the handling path as required by the SDS.

Use only a clean, fully dry, compatible tool permanently dedicated and labeled for the exact product or approved compatible product family. Separate cal-hypo tools from dichlor and trichlor tools. Separate every chlorine tool from acid, balance, and specialty tools.

A rinsed tool is not dry. A visually empty scoop can retain incompatible dust.

4. Set the water and equipment state

Configure pump, valves, features, heater, feeder, salt system, cleaner, and cover exactly as the product label and property procedure require. Verify actual circulation.

Do not assume all dry products can be broadcast. Depending on the exact label, a product may require:

  • direct distribution over water;
  • placement in a specific feeder designed for that product;
  • addition through a stated skimmer method;
  • dissolution or slurry in a separate clean compatible container;
  • application to a particular depth or area;
  • brushing, extended circulation, filter changes, or delayed use.

Never place a product in a feeder, skimmer, floater, pump basket, cleaner, filter, or cover area unless the exact label and equipment manual authorize that product and method. A feeder that previously held another chlorine type may remain dangerously contaminated even when it looks empty.

5. Measure by the required unit

Place the original container on a stable dry surface and open it with the closure away from the face and body. Avoid creating dust.

If the calculator output is mass, use an approved compatible scale and container. If the label provides a product-specific volume measure, use the exact dry, dedicated measure. Do not convert between mass and cups from a generic density or kitchen chart.

  • Never use a household, food, beverage, or shared pool-chemical container.
  • Never place the scoop handle, glove, scale pan, or measure on a wet or contaminated surface.
  • Never put a wet tool into the product.
  • Never return excess measured product to the original container when contamination is possible.
  • Never combine partial bags, bucket bottoms, dust, or unknown remnants.

Record the actual amount measured.

6. Apply only by the exact label method

Direct or broadcast addition

Use only when the label directs it. From stable footing and upwind, add at the stated rate and distribution pattern into the required circulating water. Prevent piles, concentrated surface contact, dust, splash, and material landing on coping, deck, metal, covers, tracks, landscaping, clothing, or equipment.

Brush only when and as directed. Do not enter the water to move undissolved product.

Pre-dissolving or slurry

Use only when the label requires or permits it. Use a clean, compatible, labeled container dedicated to that exact product. Add the chemical to the specified water, never pour water onto concentrated dry chemical, in the exact order, amount, temperature, and mixing method.

Do not cap a reacting or gas-producing mixture. Do not lean over it. Do not use hot water unless the label expressly requires it. Calcium chloride dissolution can generate substantial heat; the exact product method controls batch size, water, container, cooling, and addition.

Never put two chemicals in the same dilution or slurry water.

Feeder, floater, or skimmer placement

Use only the equipment and product combination approved by both label and manual. Verify the device is empty, clean, dry or conditioned exactly as required, and free from every incompatible prior product.

Never add cal-hypo to a trichlor feeder or trichlor to cal-hypo equipment. Do not assume rinsing makes a contaminated feeder safe. Isolate and escalate uncertain feeder history.

7. Stop on abnormal behavior

If the product becomes hot, wet, discolored, smoky, fuming, bubbling, clumped unexpectedly, or contacts another substance:

  • stop and move away;
  • keep people out and avoid inhaling dust or vapor;
  • do not carry, reseal, sweep, vacuum, or add another chemical;
  • follow the exact label, SDS, and emergency plan;
  • contact emergency resources when indicated.

Do not sweep different spills or residues into one pile. EPA documents inadvertent mixing during housekeeping and disposal as an incident cause.

8. Secure product, tools, and residue

Close the original container exactly as designed and keep any breathable or vented package function unobstructed. Return it to a cool, dry, secure, ventilated, compatible storage location protected from water, heat, flame, sunlight, combustible material, and every SDS-listed incompatible.

Manage the dedicated tool, PPE, package dust, residue, spill material, and rinse water only under the exact label, SDS, and your company's environmental procedure. Do not wash different residues together or into a storm drain, street, landscaping, vehicle compartment, or unknown sink.

Record the product, formulation, actual amount, time, pool or spa identity, application method, circulation, dissolution or brushing requirement, separation, restriction, and retest.

9. Circulate, inspect, and retest

Maintain the exact pump, valve, feature, heater, feeder, salt system, cleaner, and cover state. Confirm the product dissolves or disperses as required and is not sitting on a surface, trapped in a feature, or concentrated in plumbing.

Do not add another product merely because the visible granules disappear. Complete the required circulation, reaction, and separation interval.

Retest the treated parameter and every consequential side effect at the specified time. Examples:

  • dry chlorine: FC, pH, and CYA or CH context;
  • dry acid: pH and TA, plus saturation when consequential;
  • soda ash or bicarbonate: pH and TA;
  • calcium chloride: CH and updated saturation inputs;
  • CYA: CYA only after the method- and product-appropriate dissolution and test interval;
  • neutralizer: FC with a method valid for the expected low result.

If the response is absent, excessive, reversed, or unexplained, do not stack another dose. Recheck product, formulation, amount, volume, circulation, dissolution, sample, method, and side effects.

Common problems

Shared scoop appears clean

Do not use it. Microscopic or invisible residue can be enough to contaminate a reactive product. Use the clearly labeled dedicated dry tool.

Scoop or glove is damp

Stop and replace it with clean, fully dry equipment. Never put moisture into a dry-chemical container.

Product is known only as “shock”

Read the label. Cal-hypo, dichlor, trichlor, and monopersulfate are not interchangeable. They have different active ingredients, hazards, water effects, and test implications.

Calculator gives ounces but technician uses a cup

Determine whether the output is weight ounces or fluid volume. Use a scale when mass is required. Do not use a generic cup conversion.

Label says pre-dissolve

Use the exact dedicated container, water amount, order, temperature, and batch limit. Add product to water, never water onto product, and never add another chemical to that container.

Product does not dissolve

Protect the surface and keep people out. Verify water temperature, circulation, label method, product condition, amount, and brushing instruction. Do not add acid or another chemical to dissolve it.

Feeder contains unknown remnants

Do not add anything. Isolate the device, identify its history and product, and use the equipment-specific decontamination or replacement procedure.

Wind creates dust

Stop, close the product if safe, move upwind, and protect others. Resume only under safe weather and the exact PPE and handling conditions.

Result moved correctly but another parameter worsened

Record the complete effect and stop stacking corrections. Recalculate the overall plan using the product's CYA, calcium, pH, TA, salt, sulfate, or other contribution.

Major stop conditions

Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.

  • The container or liner is unlabeled, wet, leaking, swollen, hot, discolored, contaminated, crusted, mixed, decanted, damaged, improperly closed, or inconsistent with the calculation.
  • The tool is wet, shared, dirty, metal when prohibited, mislabeled, damaged, or may contain another chlorine, acid, oil, fuel, cleaner, organic material, or unknown residue.
  • Required PPE, ventilation, dry handling area, stable footing, lighting, actual circulation, dedicated equipment, spill control, secure access, or safe wind and weather are unavailable.
  • Dust cloud, fumes, heat, smoke, fire, bubbling, color change, package swelling, spill, splash, exposure, water entry, equipment failure, or unexpected reaction occurs.
