Emptying and Inspecting Automatic Cleaners

Identify the cleaner type, isolate it correctly, empty and inspect it, then reassemble and prove that it runs as intended.

Field checklist

A concise reminder for a trained technician. Use the full procedure for first-time work or unusual conditions.

Complete in order

  1. Control the area and stop the cleaner.
  2. Retrieve without damaging the cleaner or pool.
  3. Open only the user-serviceable collection area.
  4. Empty the load safely.
  5. Clean the collection component as permitted.
  6. Inspect accessible cleaner components.
  7. Reassemble exactly.
  8. Restore the correct cleaner type.
  9. Verify operation and full-system restoration.

Done when

  • The cleaner's collection component is clean, intact, correctly seated, and capable of passing its self-check or normal operating verification.
  • Hoses, cables, wheels, tracks, brushes, intakes, outlets, fittings, floats, swivels, and accessible components have no unresolved condition that makes operation unsafe or ineffective.

An automatic cleaner is a small moving system inside the larger pool system. Depending on its design, it may use pump suction, booster-pump pressure, a low-voltage power supply and floating cable, or an internal rechargeable battery.

Those differences control how the cleaner is isolated, retrieved, emptied, inspected, and restarted. “Turn it off and dump the bag” is not a safe universal procedure.

The first field question is always:

What powers this cleaner, and where does its debris go?

Why this matters

A loaded cleaner loses pickup and coverage. It may stall, float, tip, climb poorly, run in circles, restrict pump flow, increase pressure, strain a booster pump, or repeatedly release material back into the pool.

The collection load also reveals conditions that a clean-looking surface can hide: roof granules, plaster or grout pieces, sharp fragments, stones, hair, toys, landscape debris, scale chips, or recurring material from one area.

Poor service can create a larger problem. Pulling a robotic cleaner by its cable can damage conductors or seals. Opening a suction canister under active suction can injure the technician or admit air. Disconnecting a pressure cleaner with the booster running can release energy. Reinstalling a basket crooked can permit bypass. Leaving a manual speed, closed valve, disabled schedule, or disconnected hose can affect the entire pool after departure.

Before you begin

Keep people and pets out of the water. Complete the property and water inspection, then identify the exact cleaner.

Suction-side cleaner

A suction-side cleaner connects to a skimmer or dedicated suction line. Pool-pump suction draws debris through the cleaner and hose. The debris may collect in an in-line leaf canister, skimmer basket, pump basket, or filter.

The cleaner may have no bag of its own. Emptying only the visible canister may leave the pump basket or filter loaded. Trace the complete debris path.

Pressure-side cleaner

A pressure-side cleaner receives filtered return water, often from a dedicated booster pump. A water jet or turbine drives movement and sends debris into a bag or container on the cleaner. Hoses may include floats, swivels, a wall fitting, a backup valve, and a sweep tail.

Both the main circulation pump and booster arrangement matter. The exact shutdown and reconnection sequence comes from the cleaner, booster, automation, and wall-fitting instructions.

Corded robotic cleaner

A corded robot has its own motors, filter basket or panels, a floating cable, and a power supply outside the water. It normally does not use pool suction or pressure. The cable carries electrical power and communication but is not a lifting rope.

Identify the power supply, outlet, GFCI protection, cable route, connector, caddy, and approved retrieval method. Keep hands dry when operating plugs or power supplies and follow the exact manual.

Cordless robotic cleaner

A cordless robot has an internal battery and uses a model-specific charger. It may need to be turned off before or after retrieval in a particular sequence, drained, dried, cooled, and stored or charged under specified conditions.

Do not generalize from another battery cleaner. Chargers, safety clips, connector-drying requirements, temperature limits, and impeller procedures differ by model.

Record the starting state

Before changing anything, note:

  • cleaner location and whether it is moving, stalled, floating, tipped, or tangled;
  • main pump, booster pump, automation mode, valve positions, and schedules;
  • suction or pressure hose routing and visible condition;
  • robotic cable routing, power-supply or charger state, outlet area, and fault lights;
  • water level, pump prime, filter pressure or flow, and return activity when relevant;
  • cover, features, ladders, steps, drains, and obstacles affecting retrieval;
  • visible debris load and any damage.

Do not reach into moving parts or an active suction connection to identify the cleaner.

Detailed procedure

1. Control the area and stop the cleaner

Prevent pool use and keep the retrieval path clear. Use the exact manufacturer's shutdown sequence.

  • Suction-side: stop or isolate pump suction through the approved property procedure. Verify the hose and cleaner are no longer held by active suction before disconnecting.
  • Pressure-side: stop the booster and other required equipment in the specified order. Verify the cleaner and wall connection are no longer pressurized.
  • Corded robot: turn off the power supply and unplug or disconnect exactly as its manual directs before removal or service. Keep plugs, hands, and the power-supply area dry.
  • Cordless robot: end the cycle and turn the unit off at the stage required by the exact manual. Never connect a charger while the unit or connector is wet unless the manufacturer expressly designed and directs that operation.

Do not rely only on a stopped cleaner. A timer may have ended while a line remains under suction, pressure remains available, or a robot is still energized.

2. Retrieve without damaging the cleaner or pool

Bring the cleaner to an accessible edge using its approved method.

For a hose-connected cleaner, guide the body, not a random hose section, without pulling the wall fitting, skimmer adapter, or hose across tile, coping, a cover track, or a fragile finish. Keep hose sections organized so they do not kink, twist, separate, or trip someone.

For a corded robot, a common manufacturer sequence permits gentle use of the floating cable only to bring the unit to the edge, then requires lifting by the handle. Maytronics specifically warns against lifting a Dolphin from the pool by its cable. The exact model instructions control.

For a cordless robot, use the designed handle, retrieval hook, or homing feature. Do not stab at the body with a generic hook or drag it by a wheel, brush, vent, or charging contact.

Let water drain while the unit remains supported over the pool and does not rest on a fragile edge. Cleaner bodies can become much lighter as water escapes; maintain control through the weight change. Place the unit on a stable, clean surface or caddy as directed, protecting both deck and cleaner.

3. Open only the user-serviceable collection area

Confirm again that energy and flow are isolated. Identify the designed latches, clips, zipper, collar, canister lid, top-access basket, bottom panel, or filter-panel release.

Open in the intended order. Support lids and panels so they do not fall, twist, or load one hinge. Note the orientation of:

  • coarse and fine filters;
  • top and bottom panels;
  • bag collar, seam, zipper, or hook-and-loop closure;
  • basket handle and seating tabs;
  • O-ring, gasket, bypass screen, or check flap;
  • canister inlet and outlet direction.

Do not open a motor, sealed housing, battery compartment, power supply, charger, transformer, impeller cover, gearbox, or other non-routine component unless the exact manual and technician authorization define that task.

4. Empty the load safely

Remove the bag, basket, filter panels, or canister under control. Wet debris can be unexpectedly heavy and may hide sharp material.

Empty into the approved receptacle. Do not strike a plastic basket, filter frame, bag collar, or cleaner body against the deck or bin. Use gloves and an approved non-sharp tool for lodged debris; do not reach blindly beneath leaves or hair.

Inspect the contents for:

  • unusual quantity or repeated material type;
  • stones, acorns, sticks, toys, hair, rubber bands, or objects capable of blocking an intake;
  • plaster, grout, tile, coating, liner, cleaner, fitting, or cover fragments;
  • roof granules, mulch, soil, fertilizer, or construction material;
  • glass, metal, needles, bodily material, animal remains, chemical residue, oil, or another stop condition.

Photograph consequential findings before disposal or isolation.

5. Clean the collection component as permitted

Follow the exact manual. Many reusable baskets, bags, and filter panels can be rinsed with clean water, but pressure, direction, detergent, drying, and replacement instructions differ.

Rinse from the clean side toward the dirty side when the filter design calls for it so material leaves rather than embeds. Use only approved water pressure. Do not use a pressure washer, wire brush, solvent, acid, bleach, detergent, lubricant, or compressed air unless the exact manufacturer procedure permits it.

Inspect against light where practical. A filter that looks clean from above can remain packed in pleats, corners, seams, or fine mesh. Do not stretch a bag or scrape a panel to force debris through it.

Collect rinse water and debris without staining the deck, contaminating landscaping, entering a storm drain, or returning the load to the pool.

6. Inspect accessible cleaner components

With the unit safely isolated, inspect without placing fingers into a hidden intake or impeller path.

Check as applicable:

  • intake throat and visible outlet for obstruction or damage;
  • wheels, tires, bearings, tracks, belts, rollers, brushes, wings, foot pads, pods, and steering parts for wear and free intended movement;
  • bag, basket, filter panel, screen, frame, latch, handle, seal, and lid for cracks, holes, distortion, bypass paths, or poor fit;
  • suction hose sections, cuffs, swivels, regulator, vacuum plate, in-line canister, and floats for splits, collapse, air leaks, blockage, or incorrect order;
  • pressure hose, floats, swivels, backup valve, sweep tail, feed hose, wall fitting, restrictor, and bag connection for leaks, wear, blockage, or incorrect position;
  • robotic floating cable for cuts, swelling, flattening, abrasion, kinks, exposed material, connector damage, or strain;
  • robotic body, handle, vents, charging contacts, power supply, caddy, and charger for damage, heat, corrosion, moisture, or incompatible parts.

Hair and string can wrap around wheels, brushes, tracks, or visible shafts. Remove only through the user-serviceable method. Keep hands and tools away from sharp impeller blades, stored-energy parts, and inaccessible mechanisms.

7. Reassemble exactly

Install each clean, intact component in its designed orientation. Confirm:

  • filter panels or basket sit flat and do not leave a bypass gap;
  • bag opening is fully attached and closure is complete;
  • seals are clean, present, undamaged, and seated without twisting;
  • lids and latches engage evenly without force;
  • hoses connect in the correct direction and order;
  • floats, swivels, regulators, backup valves, sweep tails, and wall fittings return to their documented positions;
  • cable is untwisted and routed with sufficient slack but no trip or entanglement hazard;
  • no tool, debris, loose part, or packaging remains inside or near the unit.

If a component will not seat normally, stop. Do not trim, bend, tape, bypass, or force it to make the cleaner run.

8. Restore the correct cleaner type

Suction-side

Reinstall the cleaner, canister, skimmer plate, regulator, hose, or dedicated-line connection only through the exact approved method. Purge air from the hose when required before connecting it to suction. Restore valves and pump speed one controlled change at a time while watching prime, basket water, filter pressure, returns, and hose shape.

Pentair's representative suction-cleaner guidance requires the pump off for installation and the hose filled with water before connection. The installed cleaner's regulator and flow setting control.

Pressure-side

Reconnect the feed line and wall fitting with equipment off and depressurized as required. Confirm the bag and sweep components are secure. Restore the main circulation state, then the booster or cleaner schedule in the specified order. Inspect the wall fitting and hose for leakage before allowing a full cycle.

Corded robot

Return the clean filter and close the unit. Place it into the water and allow trapped air to escape exactly as directed. Route the cable and power supply according to the manual, maintain required electrical clearances, and connect only with dry, intact components and hands. Restore the selected cycle intentionally.

Cordless robot

If returning it to service, confirm charge state and use the exact launch sequence. If charging or storing, drain, dry, cool, position, and connect it only as its model requires, using the specified charger. Never improvise an extension cord, charger, adapter, battery, or wet charging location.

9. Verify operation and full-system restoration

Observe long enough to prove the result, not necessarily the entire cleaning cycle.

Confirm as applicable:

  • cleaner starts and moves without abnormal sound, repeated tipping, floating, wheel spin, or immediate stall;
  • suction hose stays open and the pump remains primed without air entry;
  • pressure hose, backup valve, sweep, and wall fitting behave without uncontrolled leak or tangling;
  • robotic cord or cleaner path does not wrap a ladder, drain, cover, feature, or itself;
  • no fault light, charger fault, leak, loose lid, debris bypass, or released load appears;
  • main pump, booster, valves, schedules, filter response, water features, heater, sanitizer, cover, and gate are in the intended final state.

If the cleaner repeatedly misses an area, treat coverage as a diagnostic question. Hose length, floats, returns, flow setting, wheel speed, wear, cable twist, obstacles, pool geometry, program, or unsuitable cleaner type may be involved. Emptying the basket alone does not solve every coverage problem.

Common problems

Treating every cleaner as a robot

Suction and pressure cleaners depend on pool hydraulics. Corded and cordless robots have their own electrical or battery systems. Identify the type before isolation.

Lifting by the hose or cable

This can damage connectors, conductors, cuffs, seals, or strain relief. Bring the unit to the edge only as permitted and lift by its designed handle or retrieval point.

Emptying only the visible container

A suction cleaner may also load the skimmer basket, pump basket, and filter. A pressure or robotic cleaner can retain material at an intake or behind a panel. Trace the path.

Installing a filter crooked

A lid may close while a panel, basket, bag collar, or seal leaves a bypass path. Confirm even seating and latch engagement.

Rinsing with excessive pressure

High pressure can damage fine mesh, pleats, seams, seals, or plastic. Follow the exact cleaning method.

Restarting without watching hydraulics

A suction hose can contain air, a valve can remain closed, a canister can leak, or a booster can run without the intended main flow. Restore in sequence and observe.

Charging a wet or hot battery cleaner

Cordless models have specific draining, drying, cooling, connector, location, and charger requirements. Do not generalize or improvise.

Calling movement proof of cleaning

A cleaner can move with a full bag, damaged brush, blocked intake, poor flow, bypassing filter, or bad coverage. Verify collection and condition.

Major stop conditions

Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.

  • A wet, damaged, hot, corroded, modified, incompatible, or exposed electrical cord, plug, outlet, GFCI, power supply, charger, connector, battery, or enclosure is present.
  • The cleaner, hose, cable, object, hair, clothing, or body part appears trapped by suction, pressure, entanglement, or a moving mechanism.
  • Broken glass, sharps, bodily material, a dead animal, unknown chemical, oil, or other unusual contamination is in the cleaner or collection component.
  • A wall fitting, suction cover, cleaner line, hose, cable, body, latch, seal, impeller guard, wheel, track, brush, or structural component is broken, missing, or unsafe.
