Removing Heavy Debris with a Leaf Rake
Lift submerged leaves and heavy debris without turning the water cloudy, striking fittings, scraping the finish, or dumping the load into circulation.

Done when
- Material submerged leaves and large routine debris are removed from all safely visible and accessible in-scope zones.
- No load was pushed into a suction fitting, hidden in another zone, left in downstream equipment, or deposited on the property.
A deep-bag leaf rake removes waterlogged leaves, blossoms, seed pods, sticks, and other large routine debris before that material blocks a hose, fills a basket, reaches an impeller, overloads a cleaner, or becomes filter load.
The goal is to collect the debris with the fewest controlled passes, not to drag a frame across the finish or stir the floor until the pool merely looks cleaner from above.
This SOP covers routine nonhazardous material that can be safely lifted with an approved leaf rake. Fine sediment belongs to vacuuming or filtration. Hazardous, sharp, contaminated, construction, or unknown material requires the applicable response.
Why this matters
Large debris affects more than appearance. A leaf mat can block a suction fitting, restrict a cleaner, hide a damaged surface, consume sanitizer as it decomposes, stain a finish, and release fine material whenever it is disturbed.
Manual vacuuming is often the wrong first tool. A vacuum hose and installed circulation path have limited openings. Large leaves, stones, twigs, and seed pods can lodge at the head, hose cuff, vacuum plate, basket, valve, pump inlet, or impeller. Even when the material reaches the filter, it becomes downstream service work.
A leaf rake also provides information. Roof granules, mulch, plaster chips, glass-like fragments, rodent or bird material, construction debris, or repeated vegetation from one direction can reveal a property problem that routine cleaning alone will not solve.
Before you begin
Complete the arrival and as-found inspection. Keep people and pets out of the water and control access while the long pole is in use.
Confirm:
- the water is clear enough to see the full tool path, floor, steps, drains, lights, fittings, and changes in depth;
- the pool or spa surface is known and compatible with the rake frame and technique;
- an automatic cover, floating cover, cleaner, hose, water feature, or other equipment will not be struck or entangled;
- the material is routine debris rather than broken glass, sharps, bodily material, a dead animal, chemical residue, oil, or another unusual contaminant;
- the debris can be lifted without exceeding safe tool, bag, pole, and technician control;
- an approved disposal destination is ready.
Look from more than one angle. Glare and refraction can make an object appear shallower, smaller, or farther from a fitting than it is. Do not identify a partially buried or obscured object by poking it with the rake.
Skim floating material first when it would otherwise sink during pole work. If brushing is part of the visit, decide whether attached material should be loosened before the leaf-rake pass or whether the large debris should be removed first to keep the brush path visible. The master workflow and actual condition control the order.
Inspect the tool:
- pole sections are straight and the lock holds;
- rake attachment is secure and does not rotate unexpectedly;
- frame is smooth, intact, and free of exposed wire or sharp edges;
- mesh and seams are intact, clean, and not packed with grit;
- bag depth and opening are suitable for the load;
- tool is not contaminated from another property or prior event.
A flat surface skimmer and a deep-bag leaf rake are not interchangeable. The flat net is efficient for floating debris. The deep bag is designed to collect and lift submerged material while allowing water to escape.
Detailed procedure
1. Map the debris and hazards
Divide the pool or spa into visible working zones. Identify:
- shallow steps, benches, ledges, and shelves;
- shallow-floor lanes;
- slope and transition;
- deep-floor lanes;
- corners, coves, and raised-spa areas;
- drains, lights, returns, cleaner fittings, and fragile details to avoid;
- the safest lift and disposal positions.
Begin where a test pass can be observed clearly. Plan to work through the load without repeatedly walking a wet deck or pulling full bags over coping, furniture, glass, or cover components.
Do not create a pile on top of a drain or suction outlet for easier collection. Keep large material away from active suction and preserve visibility of the cover.
2. Establish controlled pole position
Use the shortest practical pole length and two-point control. Stand with stable footing away from the edge and face the working zone. Reposition along the deck rather than leaning beyond a safe center of balance.
Before extending, turning, or lifting, account for overhead conductors, branches, fences, glass, furniture, people, and other technicians. Lower or shorten the pole before moving through a confined area.
Keep the net frame and its shadow in view. Water refraction can distort the apparent position, especially at depth. Slow down near a surface, fitting, transition, or object.
3. Set the rake ahead of the load
Lower the empty rake into a clear area. Approach the debris with the frame nearly parallel to the floor or surface and the bag trailing open behind it.
Position the leading edge just ahead of the material. Use a smooth forward motion so the frame passes under or immediately in front of the leaves and the water carries the load into the bag. Let water pass through the mesh; do not swing the rake like a shovel.
Maintain the smallest practical clearance. The frame may need light controlled contact in some situations, but it should not scrape, bounce, dig, or carry body weight. On vinyl, fiberglass, specialty coatings, new finishes, repairs, or fragile areas, follow the exact compatible method and stop if it cannot be confirmed.
4. Scoop in short overlapping lanes
Use short passes sized to the density and weight of the material. Overlap the lanes so a narrow debris band is not left between them.
For a loose leaf layer, lead the material and maintain steady movement. For a compacted wet mat, remove thin upper layers rather than trying to lift the entire mass. A large one-pass load can tear the mesh, bend the frame, overload the pole lock, strain the technician, or spill across a finished zone.
Avoid sharp turns with a loaded bag. Stop the forward motion, orient the frame, and lift or reposition deliberately. Do not use the frame to pry a stick from a drain cover, pull a cleaner hose, probe a fitting, scrape an attached deposit, or move an unknown object.
5. Lift the load under control
When the bag reaches a manageable load, rotate the opening upward enough to retain the material and raise it slowly. Allow water to drain through the mesh while the bag remains over the pool or spa and away from a fragile edge.
Do not jerk the pole or swing a heavy wet load. Keep hands clear of telescoping joints and do not brace the pole against coping, tile, glass, a fence, or the body. If the pole bows, the lock slips, the frame deforms, or the technician cannot maintain balance, lower the load into a safe visible area and divide it.
As the bag clears the water, prevent dirty drainage from crossing clean decking, outdoor furniture, windows, or cover fabric. Move directly to the approved container.
6. Empty and inspect each load
Invert or release routine debris into the approved receptacle without striking the frame against the deck, coping, wall, equipment, or bin. Use suitable gloves and a safe hand tool if material remains lodged. Never reach blindly into a compressed mass.
Look at the contents before disposal. Pause for:
- sharp, metallic, glass-like, or medical material;
- pieces resembling plaster, grout, tile, liner, coating, fitting, cleaner, or cover components;
- roof granules, concrete, soil, mulch, fertilizer, or construction waste;
- animal material, fecal matter, unusual insects, or biological growth;
- a chemical container, tablet fragment, unknown powder, oily material, or unusual color;
- repeated debris that indicates a tree, roof, drain, slope, wind, or runoff source.
Do not place wet pool debris into a customer's planter, lawn, roof drain, storm drain, chemical area, or unapproved receptacle.
7. Detail slopes, corners, steps, and fittings
As the main load decreases, shorten the pole and reduce scoop size for irregular zones.
Approach steps and benches plane by plane. Follow curved coves rather than bridging them with the frame corners. Work around drains, lights, returns, cleaner fittings, ladders, and rails without contact. Never force the rake under a cover, behind a loose fitting, or into a narrow opening.
If debris is wrapped around a drain cover or appears held by suction, do not pull against it with the rake. Keep the pool or spa out of use, stop the appropriate equipment only through an authorized procedure, and escalate the suction condition. CPSC advises that broken, loose, or missing drain covers require immediate attention.
8. Transition to the fine-debris method
A leaf rake is not expected to capture fine dust, silt, algae-like material, or small grit. When the large debris is removed, allow the water to settle enough to assess what remains.
Choose the approved next step:
- brush attached material and then collect it;
- manually vacuum settled sediment;
- use an approved portable collector;
- use filtration when the system and material can accept the load;
- document stain, scale, surface loss, or a contaminant for a different procedure.
Do not continue scraping with the rake because a mark remains. The deep bag is a collection tool, not a brush or stain-removal tool.
9. Verify the result and restore the property
Inspect the floor, slopes, steps, benches, corners, spa, and fitting surroundings from at least two positions after disturbance settles. Apply the Cleaning Acceptance Standard.
Check any skimmer basket, pump basket, cleaner, canister, or filter affected by material stirred or collected during the work. Confirm normal water level, circulation, and equipment state if the task changed or loaded the system.
Clean the rake and pole as the debris condition requires. Do not transfer plant disease, algae-like growth, animal material, chemical residue, or grit to another property. Collapse and secure the pole, remove service-created drips and debris, restore gates and covers, and complete the record.
Common problems
Using the rake as a scraper
The frame can scratch a finish, catch a seam, chip a coating, or strike a fitting. Lead the debris with the bag and use the correct brush or diagnostic procedure for attached material.
Taking the largest possible scoop
A huge wet load stresses the mesh, frame, pole, shoulders, and footing. Smaller controlled loads are safer and often faster because they do not spill.
Stirring the floor
Fast sweeps create a cloud that hides the remaining debris and hazards. Slow down, use overlapping lanes, and let water pass through the bag.
Piling leaves on a drain
This can obstruct the fitting and hide its condition. Work away from suction outlets and never use them as a collection point.
Reaching blindly into the bag
Routine leaves can hide glass, metal, thorns, insects, or animal material. Inspect visually and use gloves and an approved tool.
Calling suspended material removed
If it can settle back onto the floor, it has not left the pool. Assign the vacuum or filtration step and verify the actual result.
Ignoring where the load came from
A recurring debris pattern can justify a cover, landscaping, roof, drainage, visit-frequency, circulation, or customer-education response. Document useful evidence.
Major stop conditions
Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.
- A person or pet is in or may enter the water, or the pole and rake cannot be controlled without contact or entanglement risk.
- Lightning, severe wind, unsafe heat, unstable footing, poor lighting, an electrical hazard, or damaged deck makes pole work unsafe.
- Water clarity is inadequate to see the rake, floor, drains, steps, fittings, cover components, or submerged hazards.
- Broken glass, needles, sharps, fecal material, blood, a dead animal, unknown chemical, oil, construction waste, or another unusual contaminant is present.
