Work through the path

  1. Bubbles only during startup: observe the exact manufacturer's air-purge process. They should clear as the system reaches a stable, fully primed state.
  2. Persistent bubbles with pump-pot air: check water level, skimmers, cleaner connections, suction valves, lid, plugs, unions, and visible suction plumbing.
  3. Weak returns with high comparable filter pressure: consider filter loading or a restriction after the gauge; use the exact filter and high-pressure procedures.
  4. Weak returns with low or zero comparable pressure: confirm pump command, prime, gauge function, suction supply, obstruction before the gauge, valve path.
  5. Weak returns with normal comparable pressure: inspect mode, return valves, bypasses, downstream equipment, feature splits, return fittings, and whether the symptom is localized.
  6. Symptom in one mode only: compare the valves, pump program, water supply from the pool or spa, and dependent equipment unique to that mode.
  7. One weak or bubbling return: investigate that branch or fitting; do not condemn the entire circulation system.

Done when

  • Air clears after the allowed startup purge, circulation matches the verified baseline, and the system remains stable through the affected transition with no leak, alarm, or hazard.
  • The unresolved symptom is localized to a hydraulic segment or operating mode and handed off with the settings, observations, tests, and safe final state.

Persistent air at the returns and weak water movement can appear together, but they are not the same symptom. Air commonly enters on the suction side before the pump. Low flow can result from inadequate water supply, suction restriction, pump state, a loaded filter, a closed or obstructed return path, a downstream device, or a measurement problem.

This diagnostic identifies the affected mode and narrows the problem to a hydraulic segment. It does not authorize pressure-side disassembly, suction-outlet work, electrical testing, internal pump access, gas work, or concealed-plumbing repair.

Fast decision

  1. Bubbles only during startup: observe the exact manufacturer's air-purge process. They should clear as the system reaches a stable, fully primed state.
  2. Persistent bubbles with air in the pump pot: focus first on water supply from the pool or spa, skimmers, cleaners or vacuum connections, suction valves, lid and plug seals, unions, and visible suction plumbing.
  3. Weak returns with high comparable filter pressure: consider filter loading or a restriction after the gauge; use the exact filter and high-pressure procedures.
  4. Weak returns with low or zero comparable pressure: confirm pump command, prime, gauge function, suction supply, obstruction before the gauge, valve path, and pump performance.
  5. Weak returns with normal comparable pressure: inspect mode, return valves, bypasses, downstream equipment, feature splits, return fittings, and whether the symptom is localized.
  6. Symptom in one mode only: compare the valves, pump program, water supply from the pool or spa, and dependent equipment unique to that mode.
  7. One weak or bubbling return: investigate that branch or fitting; do not condemn the entire circulation system.

First decide what is actually happening

Use direct observations, not just the customer's label.

Air symptom

Record whether the returns release:

  • a short startup burst that clears;
  • fine continuous bubbles;
  • intermittent large bursts;
  • bubbles only at one return;
  • bubbles only when a cleaner, feature, spa, heater, or higher speed activates;
  • air followed by loss of flow or prime.

Look simultaneously at the pump pot. A persistent or changing air pocket, churning, surging water, or loss of prime connects the return symptom to the suction and pump path. Return bubbles without visible pump-pot air can involve a local feature, spa air system, ozone or other intentional gas system, a downstream air source, or misleading observation.

Flow symptom

Describe what changed:

  • all returns are weaker than the same-mode baseline;
  • only one branch or feature is weak;
  • skimming is poor while wall returns remain active;
  • flow falls as the cleaner cycles or valves move;
  • flow starts normally, then declines;
  • displayed flow is low but physical water movement appears normal;
  • physical flow is poor while the controller reports normal.

A hand held near a return is a qualitative observation, not a calibrated flow measurement. Record how it compares with that return's own established state.

Preserve the as-found state

Before resetting, cleaning, moving valves, or changing pump speed, record:

  • pool, spa, spillover, heating, cleaner, feature, freeze, service, or timeout mode;
  • pump command source, speed or flow setpoint, displayed speed, flow and power if available;
  • valve and actuator positions, including manual overrides;
  • water level, skimmer weir and basket behavior, vacuum or cleaner connections;
  • pump-pot water level, bubble size, surging, prime, sound, vibration, heat, and alarms;
  • filter type, running pressure, gauge behavior, and comparison baseline;
  • return locations, relative strength, bubbles, and active downstream equipment;
  • leaks, wetness, mineral tracks, recent service, programming, weather, and customer changes.

Do not clear a warning or disturb an intermittent state before capturing it. Use Normal Equipment States and Baseline Readings to decide whether the comparison is valid.

Trace the water path in order

1. Pool or spa water level and suction supply

Confirm that the active pool or spa has enough water to continuously feed the selected suction sources. Watch each skimmer from a safe position. A low level, stuck weir, full basket, floating obstruction, cover interference, excessive draw, or changed valve split can let a skimmer pull air.

Inspect accessible cleaner and vacuum hoses, plates, leaf canisters, dedicated ports, and caps. A cracked hose, loose connection, empty line, or open unused port can admit air or restrict supply. Never place a hand near an active suction outlet, drain, or fitting.

If the symptom begins in spa mode, confirm that the spa is not being drained by mismatched suction and return paths. If it begins when the cleaner operates, compare the state with the cleaner isolated only through the approved procedure.

2. Suction valves and visible plumbing

Use the verified port map. A handle or actuator marker does not prove which internal path is open.

Look for a partly closed or mispositioned valve, disconnected actuator, manual override, damaged lid, loose union, missing plug, cracked fitting, collapsed hose, displaced pipe, wet soil, mineral trail, or a change since recent service.

A suction-side leak can draw air inward without leaking water outward while running. Evidence can appear as pot air, return bubbles, loss after shutdown, a change with pump speed, or moisture after the pump stops. Do not use improvised sealants, flames, pressurization, or unapproved flooding tests to find it.

3. Pump and strainer pot

Confirm the pump is running the intended program rather than priming, a low-speed schedule, an override, a limit, a protection mode, or an alarm response. Compare display values with actual water movement.

Inspect the pot through the lid before opening. Note water level, stable small pocket versus persistent large air, vortexing, debris, surging, and sound. If accessible service is authorized, use Pump and Strainer-Pot Inspection and the pump-basket procedure; control restart and verify zero pressure first.

A dirty basket, displaced basket, debris across the lid seal, wrong or damaged O-ring, loose drain plug, cracked lid, or misassembled union can affect flow or admit air. Internal impeller access and motor or drive testing require their own authorization.

If the pump cannot establish stable prime, leave this guide and use Pump Will Not Prime. Do not repeatedly run it dry.

4. Filter, gauge, and trapped air

Stand clear during startup. Use the exact filter's air-relief and startup instructions. If air will not purge to the required steady water stream, the gauge rises before water appears, or the system is unstable, shut down under the manual and refer.

Interpret pressure only against an equivalent healthy baseline:

Never loosen, tighten, tap, or adjust a filter lid, clamp, gauge, valve, union, or closure under pressure. Before any authorized filter service, prevent restart, open the manual air relief as instructed, stand clear, wait for all pressure to escape, and confirm the gauge reads zero.

5. Downstream equipment and return path

Identify everything water crosses after the filter: heater, heat pump, check valve, bypass, sanitizer feeder, salt cell, flow switch, chemical controller, solar system, cleaner booster, spa return, water feature, or other device.

Look for changed bypass position, closed return valve, actuator failure, check-valve problem, debris or scale in an authorized accessible device, heater or salt flow error, collapsed or leaking fitting, and unintended flow division. Do not bypass a safety interlock or force equipment to operate without required flow.

If only one return or branch is affected, compare its fitting direction, eyeball opening, valve, feature state, and observable discharge with its own history. Do not insert tools into a return or disassemble a pressurized fitting.

Controlled isolation

Change only one approved variable at a time. A useful test has:

  1. a stated hypothesis;
  2. a documented starting state;
  3. one authorized change;
  4. observation of pump pot, pressure, returns, bubbles, sound, and affected equipment;
  5. restoration to the starting state before the next test.

Examples include selecting a verified alternate skimmer path, isolating an approved cleaner connection, returning an actuator from confirmed manual override, or comparing the same mode at its authorized program. The exact plumbing map and manuals must support the change.

Never close every suction or return path, deadhead the pump, exceed a limit, defeat a flow switch, increase speed merely to overpower a fault, or leave a customer with undocumented valve or schedule changes.

Interpret the pattern

Air changes with one suction source

The likely category is that skimmer, cleaner connection, valve branch, or visible plumbing path. Confirm water supply and accessible connections. Do not declare a concealed pipe leak until simpler components and controlled isolation support it.

Air increases with pump speed

Higher suction can reveal a marginal water supply, seal, connection, valve, hose, or restriction. High speed masking weak flow or worsening air is evidence, not a repair. Return to the authorized state and refer the pattern.

Flow improves after basket or filter service

Verify that the service was actually due under the exact procedure, then record before-and-after state bundles at the same pump and valve configuration. Confirm no air, leak, assembly error, or abnormal pressure. A temporary improvement does not excuse investigating repeated rapid loading.

Flow changes when valves or features move

Confirm the controller command, actuator movement, internal port effect, and physical water result. An actuator can rotate in the wrong direction, stop short, remain manually overridden, or display a state that the valve does not produce.

Display and physical behavior disagree

Record the displayed value, unit, source, timestamp, and independent observation. A virtual flow estimate, dirty sensor, calibration issue, communication delay, stale app state, wrong unit, or changed configuration can mislead. Do not recalibrate or reprogram from one unverified disagreement.

Nothing accessible explains the symptom

Possible remaining categories include internal pump or impeller restriction, concealed suction or return obstruction, underground air leak, collapsed plumbing, failed check valve, internal heater or device restriction, design limitation, or invalid baseline. Refer with the evidence that narrowed the path; do not guess the component.

Safe restoration and completion

After an approved correction:

  • restore all valves, actuators, schedules, speeds, modes, bypasses, cleaners, heaters, salt systems, features, and automation settings;
  • verify stable prime and air purge under the exact manuals;
  • compare pot behavior, filter pressure, returns, pump values, sound, and leaks with the valid baseline;
  • run through the operating transition that originally produced the symptom;
  • confirm heater, sanitizer, cleaner, spa, cover, and feature states affected by the work;
  • document the cause only to the level supported by evidence.

If circulation remains inadequate, leave affected equipment safely stopped or restricted as authorized. Record the water-quality, heating, freeze, sanitizer, cleaner, and customer-use impacts and assign urgency.

Major stop conditions

Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.

  • A suction outlet cover or fitting is missing, loose, cracked, broken, displaced, or presents a possible entrapment hazard.
  • Air remains trapped in a pressurized filter, pressure changes rapidly or exceeds a limit, the gauge stays above zero, or the filter body or closure appears unsafe.
  • A component is spraying, materially leaking, deformed, unusually hot, or at risk of flooding people, structures, or electrical equipment.
  • There is smoke, arcing, shock sensation, wet electrical equipment, burning odor, repeated breaker or GFCI trip, gas odor, soot, rollout, or a combustion concern.
