Backwashing a Sand Filter
Backwash a sand filter through the correct valve and discharge sequence, restore filtration, and leave behind a clean pressure baseline worth comparing.
Field checklist
A concise reminder for a trained technician. Use the full procedure for first-time work or unusual conditions.
Complete in order
- Confirm backwashing is due from the established clean-pressure baseline.
- Inspect the filter and multiport or backwash valve.
- Approve and secure the wastewater discharge route.
- Record the required valve sequence before changing flow.
- Stop the pump and prevent unintended restart.
- Set BACKWASH and observe the discharge continuously.
- Stop the pump before every valve-position change.
- Use RINSE only when the exact system requires it.
- Return positively to FILTER or the documented normal position.
- Restart while standing clear and verify stable operation.
- Record the new baseline and restore water level and controls.
Done when
- The exact valve sequence completed without any powered valve movement, uncontrolled discharge, dry running, abnormal pressure, or equipment leakage.
- The valve is positively restored to FILTER/normal operation, the waste path is inactive and secure, air is purged, and pool returns and dependent equipment operate correctly.
Backwashing reverses flow through the filter bed and carries released debris to waste. It is effective only when the correct valve path, pump state, discharge route, water supply, air relief, and return-to-filter sequence are all controlled.
The handle is not a shortcut dial. Moving a backwash valve with the pump running can damage the valve and connected system. Sending wastewater to the wrong place can flood property or pollute streets, storm drains, creeks, lagoons, and the ocean.
Fast orientation
- Identify the filter, media, backwash valve, manual, and baseline.
- Prove that backwash is due in a comparable operating state.
- Verify and secure the complete legal waste route.
- Stop the pump before every valve change.
- Set BACKWASH and open required paths.
- Stand clear, start, and observe clarity and safe operation.
- Stop; use RINSE only if the exact valve requires it.
- Stop again before returning to FILTER.
- Restart through the air-relief procedure and verify the waste port is inactive.
- Record same-state post-backwash pressure, flow, water loss, and exceptions.
Why this matters
A sand filter loads gradually as captured material increases resistance. Backwash expands and agitates the media bed in the reverse direction, releasing debris to the waste line. A rinse step on many multiport valves then sends water through the settled bed to waste before normal filtration resumes.
Valve designs differ. A six- or seven-position multiport may include FILTER, BACKWASH, RINSE, WASTE, RECIRCULATE, CLOSED, and WINTER states. A slide or push-pull valve may have only filter and backwash positions and may reverse which physical handle direction means normal operation. The labels and exact manual, not habit, control.
Backwashing also removes treated water. Unnecessary or repeated cycles waste water, sanitizer, heat, and salt and can lower the pool enough to starve suction. Your company requires evidence that service is due and measures whether it worked.
Before you begin
Use BLX-SOP-022 to verify the exact filter and separately identify the installed backwash valve. Confirm:
- filter manufacturer/model/size and media type;
- valve manufacturer/model/type, port labels, positions, lock/detent, and exact handle sequence;
- pump/control sources and safe stop method;
- suction, return, feature, and waste plumbing;
- valid clean pressure/flow state and model-specific backwash trigger;
- expected water volume impact and minimum safe pool or spa water level;
- approved discharge destination and any sewer-agency/property permission.
Do not assume the hose ends where it disappears. Trace permanent piping to its known approved endpoint. Do not assume a yard drain is sanitary sewer; many drains lead to the stormwater system.
In your company’s San Diego-area service region, local guidance prohibits filter backwash entering streets, gutters, storm drains, creeks, or receiving waters. Sanitary-sewer acceptance, pH/flow limitations, saline-water rules, landscape infiltration, septic constraints, and other conditions vary by property and jurisdiction. Verify the current controlling rule before service.
Detailed procedure
1. Confirm that backwash is due
At the established clean-comparison state, record:
- pump command/RPM/flow;
- suction and return valve positions;
- active pool or spa/cleaner/heater/feature state;
- filter pressure;
- return response or measured flow when available;
- water level, pump prime, air, leaks, and alerts.
Apply the exact filter manufacturer's criterion. Many manuals use a pressure rise above original clean pressure and/or a material flow reduction, but the number and method vary. A pressure reading from a different speed or valve path is not evidence.
Check simpler causes before backwashing: low water level, loaded skimmer/pump basket, wrong valve state, suction air, pump fault, obstructed return, inaccurate gauge, or downstream configuration. Backwash will not correct them.
If preventive backwash is required after a known debris/plaster event, document that reason separately.
2. Inspect filter and valve condition
With the system in a safe observable state, inspect:
- tank, base, closure, gauge, manual air relief, drain, unions, and plumbing;
- multiport/slide-valve body, handle, shaft, pin/lock, labels, detents, sight glass, and ports;
- water/mineral tracks at the waste port that may show bypass leakage in FILTER;
- pipe support, hose adapters, clamps, caps, and valve orientation;
- signs of sand/media at returns or the waste line.
Do not operate a damaged, seized, incompletely labeled, improvised, or ambiguous valve. Do not use handle position alone when the valve body/ports may have been installed or reconfigured incorrectly; the verified plumbing map must agree.
3. Approve and secure the discharge route
Before changing the valve:
- identify the exact endpoint;
- confirm current jurisdiction/property/sewer acceptance;
- verify the route can carry the expected flow without blockage, backup, erosion, flooding, or property damage;
- inspect permanent piping, valves, caps, air gaps, and cleanouts that are part of the authorized route;
- fully unroll and inspect a temporary rated hose when one is used;
- secure hose and endpoint against whipping or movement;
- keep people, pets, vehicles, electrical equipment, soil, structures, and neighboring property clear;
- plan how clarity will be observed without standing in wastewater or at an unsafe endpoint.
Never insert or seal a discharge hose into a connection in a way that can contaminate a potable system, pressurize a building drain, or violate the receiving system's required air gap. Do not use a toilet, sink, cleanout, septic system, landscape, or other destination without property-specific approval and capacity.
Do not start if rain, saturated soil, slope, erosion, low spots, blocked drains, or receiving conditions make the route unsafe.
4. Plan the valve-state sequence in writing
Write the exact sequence from the installed manual before starting.
Typical multiport example only:
FILTER: pump off: BACKWASH: pump on/off: RINSE: pump on/off: FILTER: pump on
Typical slide/push-pull systems may not have a rinse position and may use a different handle direction:
FILTER/NORMAL: pump off: BACKWASH: pump on/off: FILTER/NORMAL: pump on
Add required air-relief, suction, return, isolation, and waste-valve actions to the actual plan. The example does not override the installed manual.
At every transition the pump must be stopped before the backwash-valve handle moves. Do not coast the handle while the impeller winds down; verify circulation has stopped.
5. Prepare water supply and affected equipment
Confirm the pool or spa starts high enough to support the expected discharge without unsafe suction operation. Identify whether an autofill is functional and authorized, but do not rely on it to outrun backwash.
Place heater, salt system, chemical feeder, cleaner, solar, spa, and features into the exact safe state required for the mode change. Backwash water must not be routed through an incompatible or chemically concentrated path.
If tablet/chemical equipment or recent dosing creates an uncertain wastewater condition, stop and resolve disposal requirements before discharge.
6. Stop the pump and control restart
Stop the pump using the exact operating procedure. Account for automation, schedules, freeze protection, remote apps, relays, external controllers, and another person.
Follow manufacturer requirements for service/control. Verify the motor and circulation stop. Do not touch damaged/wet electrical equipment.
Open the filter manual air relief only when and as the exact backwash procedure instructs, from the prescribed safe position. Stand clear of the filter and pressure-containing closures.
7. Set the BACKWASH path
With the pump stopped:
- depress, release, lift, turn, push, or pull the handle only by the exact valve method;
- move directly to the clearly identified BACKWASH position;
- let the selector seat fully in its detent or engage the slide-valve lock/pin;
- set any separate suction, waste, isolation, or discharge valves required by the property procedure;
- confirm the waste route is open and pool suction remains available.
Do not pause between multiport positions under load, force a handle, add a cheater bar, strike the valve, loosen a cap, or partially engage a slide valve.
If the valve does not move and seat normally with the pump confirmed off, stop. Internal valve service is a separate procedure.
8. Start and observe backwash
Clear the area and stand away from the filter, pump closures, valve, and discharge endpoint. Start the pump in the manual's specified backwash state.
Immediately verify:
- pump establishes and maintains prime;
- the expected waste path carries flow;
- hose/piping remains secure and does not leak, whip, swell, back up, or flood;
- filter pressure and sound remain appropriate for the mode;
- tank, valve, sight glass, unions, and piping behave normally;
- pool water level remains safe.
Observe wastewater clarity at the sight glass or safe designated observation point. Complete backwash by the exact model criterion, often when discharge clears after the required minimum process, not by time alone. Record duration only as supporting evidence.
Do not walk away. Stop promptly for failed prime, no discharge, unexpected discharge location, hose movement, flooding, abnormal pressure, severe noise, air, leak, falling water level, or media loss.
9. Stop before leaving BACKWASH
Stop the pump and verify water movement has ceased before touching the backwash valve.
Record:
- final discharge clarity;
- unusual sediment, scale, color, odor, oil, biological material, or sand/media;
- duration and pump command;
- water-level change;
- discharge route condition.
An initial trace of media may have model/property-specific interpretation. Continuing sand loss is not routine cleaning. Stop and refer for internal/valve/media evaluation.
10. Perform RINSE only when required
For a multiport system whose exact instructions require RINSE:
- with pump stopped, set the handle fully to RINSE;
- keep the approved waste path open and secure;
- stand clear and start the pump;
- run for the exact manual's criterion/time to settle the bed and clear the valve path;
- observe discharge, pressure, prime, and leaks;
- stop the pump and verify flow stops.
Do not invent a rinse step on a two-position slide/push-pull valve. Do not use RECIRCULATE or WASTE as a substitute for RINSE.
11. Return positively to FILTER/normal
Only with the pump stopped:
- move the multiport fully to FILTER and confirm detent;
- or move the slide/push-pull valve to its exact normal-filtration position and engage its lock;
- restore any separate waste/isolation valve or cap per the approved property configuration;
- open the pool return path;
- verify all necessary suction and return lines allow free flow;
- open the manual air relief as the startup procedure requires.
Perform a visual/tactile-from-handle-only state check. Do not rely on the word “normal” without verifying the installed valve's actual labeled position.
12. Restart filtration while standing clear
From a safe position:
- start the pump in the approved normal program;
- observe prime and air evacuation;
- keep the filter air relief open until the exact closing criterion, commonly a steady water stream;
- close the relief by its designed method;
- inspect tank, valve, unions, gauge, relief, waste path, and returns;
- allow the system to stabilize.
Stop immediately for abnormal pressure, failure to purge air, filter/valve leakage, unexpected waste discharge, dry running, severe sound, or no return flow.
Verify the waste port does not continue passing water in FILTER. A leaking waste line can lower pool level and indicate a valve seal/diverter problem. Do not cap an active unexplained leak in a way that creates pressure.
13. Record the post-backwash baseline
At the same state used before service, record:
- pump command/RPM/flow;
- suction/return valve positions;
- active features;
- stabilized filter pressure;
- return response and air;
- waste-port condition;
- dependent heater/sanitizer/cleaner status.
Compare with the valid clean baseline. If pressure remains elevated or flow remains weak, do not repeat backwash automatically. Possible zones include remaining media loading, channeling, scale/oil contamination, mudballing, wrong/aged media, damaged internals, gauge error, valve bypass, pump/suction condition, or another system restriction.
Repeated short filter cycles also require diagnosis of the pool load and media/system condition. Backwashing more often is not a root-cause repair.
14. Restore water and operating controls
Assess the final pool or spa water level. Arrange refill only through the approved property procedure and remain mindful that added source water changes chemistry, temperature, and salt/CYA balance. Do not leave an unattended hose unless the property has an approved controlled method.
Restore automation, schedules, heater, sanitizer, cleaner, spa, spillover, and features. Confirm no manual override, open waste route, disabled protection, or temporary valve state remains.
Document the final state and any water test/adjustment that another SOP requires after material refill.
Common problems
Moving the multiport while the pump runs
Stop and verify flow has ceased before every change. Powered valve movement can damage the valve and system.
Assuming every valve uses RINSE
Many multiports do; some slide/push-pull valves do not. Follow the exact installed valve manual.
Backwashing because pressure “looks high”
Compare the same pump/valve/feature state to a valid clean baseline and check other circulation causes first.
Trusting a hidden pipe or yard drain
Trace and approve the endpoint. A drain may lead to a storm system or an inadequate receiving route.
Letting a hose whip or flood
Inspect, fully deploy, secure, and monitor the hose and endpoint before and throughout operation.
Using time as the only completion test
Duration varies with model, pump, filter load, and water. Use the manual's clarity/process criterion.
Leaving the valve between positions
Confirm a positive detent or lock in the exact labeled state before starting.
Repeating backwash when performance does not recover
Persistent pressure/flow or short-cycle problems require diagnosis. Repetition wastes water and may hide internal damage.
Forgetting the water-level and chemistry impact
Backwash removes treated water. Record loss, restore level safely, and trigger follow-up chemistry work when material.
Major stop conditions
Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.
- The exact filter, media, valve model/type, port labels, handle positions, controlling instructions, or clean-pressure state cannot be verified.
- The pump or automatic/remote restart cannot be controlled, the valve must be forced, or the handle/shaft/lock/pin/detent/labels/plumbing are damaged, seized, incomplete, mismatched, or leaking dangerously.
- The waste route is unknown, blocked, disconnected, frozen, damaged, unsecured, too small, likely to flood/erode/damage property, or not legally approved for backwash wastewater.
- The filter, closure, gauge, air relief, valve, pipe, union, or hose is cracked, bulging, unusually hot, unstable, spraying, separating, or showing unsafe pressure behavior.
