Backwash and recharge a D.E. filter without losing control of pressure, valve position, wastewater, dry media, or the model-specific recharge dose.

Field checklist

A concise reminder for a trained technician. Use the full procedure for first-time work or unusual conditions.

Complete in order

  1. Confirm backwashing, rather than teardown, is the correct task.
  2. Record the as-found filter, pressure, flow, and valve state.
  3. Verify the wastewater and spent-media disposal route.
  4. Prepare the exact approved recharge amount before changing flow.
  5. Stop the pump before every valve-position change.
  6. Backwash continuously while observing discharge and equipment condition.
  7. Restore FILTER or normal and purge air while standing clear.
  8. Measure the filter aid by weight and prepare it as directed.
  9. Feed the recharge through the exact designated path.
  10. Verify coating, pressure, flow, leaks, and media return.
  11. Restore water level and controls, then document the new baseline.

Done when

  • The backwash/disposal sequence completed safely, the valve and separation equipment are restored, and no spent media or wastewater reached an unapproved location.
  • The exact verified filter-aid product and measured recharge weight were introduced by the model-specific method with stable pump prime and circulation.

A diatomaceous-earth filter uses a replaceable layer of filter aid on grids or cartridge-style elements. Backwash removes dirty coating and captured debris. The filter must then receive the exact approved recharge before normal filtration continues.

This makes the task one continuous chain:

identify → discharge safely → backwash → restore flow → measure → recharge → verify

Stopping after “the waste water ran clear” leaves the filter unprotected and the job unfinished.

Fast orientation

  1. Verify filter area, element style, valve, separation equipment, manual, and recharge weight.
  2. Record why backwash is due in the valid comparison state.
  3. Approve and secure wastewater and spent-media containment.
  4. Stop the pump before every backwash-valve movement.
  5. Relieve/purge air and backwash by the exact model sequence.
  6. Handle separation-tank contents only by its separate pressure-vessel procedure.
  7. Stop and restore FILTER/normal with return paths open.
  8. Restart, purge air, and confirm stable circulation.
  9. Weigh the exact approved filter aid and make the required slurry without dust.
  10. Feed through the designated path, then verify pressure, returns, waste leakage, and media retention.

Why this matters

D.E. coating performs the filtration and protects the underlying element fabric. Too little coating can expose and load the elements unevenly. Too much can increase resistance and shorten the cycle. The correct quantity depends on the exact filter model, effective area, design, product, and manufacturer procedure.

Backwashing creates wastewater containing spent filter aid and captured solids. Dry filter aid can create inhalable dust. Both phases require control: keep waste out of stormwater and keep powder out of the breathing zone.

D.E. filters are also pressure vessels. Valve changes, pressure relief, separation tanks, air removal, and startup must follow exact instructions while the technician stands clear.

Before you begin

Use BLX-SOP-022 and BLX-EQP-007 to establish:

  • exact filter manufacturer, model, square-foot area, production/closure generation, and element style;
  • grid/manifold versus D.E.-coated cartridge configuration;
  • multiport, slide/push-pull, bump/regeneration, or other valve model and positions;
  • separation tank/bag model and procedure, if installed;
  • pump and every automatic/remote command source;
  • normal suction/return/waste paths;
  • original clean pressure and model-specific backwash trigger;
  • exact compatible filter-aid product and recharge amount by weight;
  • current product label and SDS;
  • approved discharge and spent-media disposal route.

Do not derive charge from appearance or from another manufacturer's filter with the same nominal area. Do not rely on an unlabeled scoop or container. If a manual describes a volume container, retain the weight as your company's controlled value unless technical review validates that exact device and product method.

Confirm enough approved product is on hand before backwash begins. The system should not be left running uncoated or abandoned mid-process because media is missing.

Detailed procedure

1. Confirm that backwash, not teardown, is the right task

In the valid comparison state, record pump command, valves, features, pressure, flow/returns, water level, prime, air, leaks, and alerts.

Apply the exact manual's backwash trigger. Consider full opening/element cleaning or diagnostic referral instead when:

  • pressure does not recover after prior backwash;
  • filter cycles have become repeatedly short;
  • D.E. returns to the pool;
  • grids/elements/manifold are known damaged or overdue for inspection;
  • coating is oily, scaled, clumped, or chemically fouled;
  • valve bypass/leakage is suspected;
  • internal parts or closure require service.

Backwash cannot inspect fabric, manifold, standpipe, air-bleed assembly, or internal seals. It is not a substitute for periodic exact-model teardown cleaning.

2. Record and inspect the as-found system

Photograph:

  • filter label, closure, gauge, air relief, drain, and base;
  • backwash valve labels, handle/shaft/lock and ports;
  • separation tank, relief, closure, bag record, and connections when present;
  • waste pipe/hose and endpoint;
  • pump/controller display and valve states;
  • leaks, mineral tracks, deformation, corrosion, or prior D.E. residue.

Check the pool for D.E. at returns, floor, spa spillover, or cleaner bag. Confirm suspected powder is not plaster dust, scale, sand, salt, or another material solely by color.

Do not operate cracked, bulging, hot, unstable, leaking, incompletely labeled, or ambiguously configured equipment.

3. Verify wastewater and media disposal

Trace the full route and confirm jurisdiction/property/sewer acceptance. Inspect capacity, blockage, restraint, slope, erosion, flooding, and adjacent electrical/property hazards.

For a separation tank, verify:

  • it is the correct installed model and properly plumbed;
  • its bag/element and closure are serviceable;
  • both filter and separation-tank relief procedures are understood;
  • captured media has an approved solid-waste/disposal path;
  • opening will occur only after separate zero-pressure proof under its manual.

Never allow backwash slurry, spent D.E., filter solids, or saline water into a street, gutter, storm drain, creek, lagoon, or receiving water. Do not assume landscape or sanitary sewer acceptance; verify the current local rule and receiving capacity.

4. Prepare the exact recharge before changing flow

From the controlling manual, record:

  • full initial charge;
  • backwash recharge amount, if the manufacturer distinguishes it;
  • approved product/grade;
  • feeding path and valve state;
  • slurry instructions;
  • any skimmer/suction configuration;
  • required circulation conditions.

Your company does not apply a generic partial-charge percentage. Some procedures call for the listed full charge after backwash; others may specify a different model-specific amount. The exact current instruction wins.

Inspect the packaged product. Stop if it is unlabeled, damp, contaminated, hardened, mixed, expired where applicable, or stored beside incompatible chemicals in a way that compromises identity.

Set up the scale and bucket away from wind, people, pets, open chemicals, traffic, and equipment ventilation. Keep water ready so powder can be wetted promptly.

5. Stop the pump and control restart

Stop the pump and account for keypad, breaker/disconnect requirements, automation, relay, schedule, freeze protection, app, external controller, and another person.

Verify rotation and flow stop before moving the backwash valve. Never shift a multiport or slide/push-pull valve under flow.

Relieve filter and separation-tank pressure exactly as the installed manuals require. Open the specified air relief, stand clear, and verify gauges read zero before any pressure-vessel service. Backwash valve operation that does not require opening the filter or separation tank still requires exact pressure/startup controls.

6. Set the backwash state

With pump stopped:

  • place the valve fully into its exact D.E. BACKWASH position;
  • engage pin/lock/detent;
  • set suction and waste routes as the filter procedure specifies;
  • open separation-tank relief/path where required;
  • verify adequate water level and pump supply;
  • keep normal returns controlled according to the installed sequence.

Slide-valve handle direction and multiport end state vary. Do not borrow the sand-filter sequence or assume RINSE is used. Some D.E. multiport procedures return through CLOSED/OPEN or another documented state rather than the same sequence as sand.

7. Backwash while continuously observing

Stand clear of filter and separation-tank closures, pump lid, valve, and discharge endpoint. Start by the exact procedure.

Verify:

  • pump primes and stays supplied;
  • required air-relief streams appear before closure at the specified point;
  • the expected waste/separation route flows;
  • pressure remains appropriate;
  • hoses/pipes remain secured and leak-free;
  • pool water level remains safe;
  • no dangerous sound, vibration, swelling, backup, flooding, or release occurs.

Continue until the manual's completion criterion, often clear discharge, is met. A sight glass is useful only when clean and installed in the actual waste path.

If the filter uses a bump/regeneration cycle, follow its exact repetitions and pump states; do not invent handle strokes or run time.

Stop for persistent unusual grid fabric, internal parts, or filter material in waste. Dirty D.E. is expected; broken-element evidence is not.

8. Stop and complete separation-tank handling when present

Stop the pump and verify flow ceases. For a separation tank:

  1. open its air relief as required;
  2. stand clear and wait for discharge to stop;
  3. verify its gauge reads zero where fitted;
  4. open only under its exact closure procedure;
  5. handle the bag/element and spent material with label/SDS dust controls;
  6. contain solids without shaking or creating airborne powder;
  7. dispose through the approved route;
  8. inspect/reinstall the bag, lid, seal, and closure exactly;
  9. restore its valve/flow state.

This D.E.-filter SOP does not replace the separation-tank manual. Stop when its closure, bag, pressure relief, or disposal state is uncertain.

Without a separation tank, document discharge endpoint condition and any captured solids according to the approved plan.

9. Restore FILTER/normal with pump stopped

Move the installed valve fully to the exact FILTER/normal position and engage its lock/detent. Restore pool returns, suction valves, separation equipment, and any separate waste/isolation valves to the prescribed startup state.

Open the filter manual air relief as required. Confirm the return path is open and unobstructed. Verify no service cap, hose, or valve can deadhead the system.

10. Restart and purge air before recharge

Stand clear and start the pump. Observe prime, air-relief discharge, gauge behavior, closure, valve, waste path, and returns.

Close the manual air relief only at the exact criterion, commonly after a steady water stream. Allow circulation to stabilize enough to verify:

  • pump remains primed;
  • filter pressure is safe;
  • no closure/valve/plumbing leak appears;
  • waste port is inactive in FILTER;
  • designated skimmer/feed path has reliable suction;
  • downstream equipment is in the intended temporary state.

Do not delay recharge longer than necessary. Do not operate unattended or treat the uncoated filter as ready for service.

11. Weigh the filter aid

Use a clean dedicated scale on a stable surface:

  1. confirm unit of measure;
  2. tare the clean dry receiving container;
  3. transfer product gently and close the source bag/container between additions;
  4. stop at the exact required net weight;
  5. photograph/record the display with product identity when your company's approved procedure permits;
  6. seal and store remaining product safely.

Do not pack a scoop, estimate fractions by eye, or use wet product. Avoid pouring from height or working into wind. Never sweep dry spills into the air; follow label/SDS cleanup.

12. Prepare the slurry when required

Add clean water to the dedicated bucket as the manual instructs. Introduce measured filter aid close to the water surface with gentle motion to minimize dust. Mix into the specified pumpable consistency without splashing or using chemical tools.

Do not add acid, chlorine, algaecide, clarifier, detergent, or another chemical to the slurry. Do not reuse a bucket carrying incompatible residue.

If the exact manual permits another feeding method, follow it. A slurry is not universal, but dust control and measured dosage remain mandatory.

13. Feed through the exact designated path

Confirm the pump is running in FILTER/normal, the designated skimmer or feed path is open, and water moves reliably toward the filter.

Introduce the slurry gradually into the top of the designated skimmer or exact manufacturer port. Maintain enough water with the slurry so powder does not cake in the basket, line, or pot. Do not dump dry powder into the pool, deck, gutter, pump pot, filter air relief, or random skimmer.

Watch:

  • skimmer level and suction stability;
  • pump prime and pot air;
  • filter pressure response;
  • returns for visible D.E.;
  • waste line for leakage;
  • bucket and work area for residual product.

Rinse the dedicated bucket and feed path only with the controlled amount/method allowed by the procedure so the measured charge reaches the filter. Do not create runoff.

Stop feeding if the pump loses prime, pressure spikes, the skimmer gulps air, slurry backs up, or D.E. appears at returns.

14. Verify coating and post-recharge operation

Allow the exact model's required circulation/coating period while remaining present. Record in the same comparison state:

  • pump command/RPM/flow;
  • suction/return valve positions and active features;
  • stabilized pressure;
  • return strength and visible media;
  • air, sound, alerts, and downstream equipment;
  • waste-port and separation-system leakage;
  • final water level.

Post-backwash/recharge pressure should be evaluated against the valid clean baseline for the same state. Persistent elevation, weak flow, short cycles, or material return calls for diagnosis/full cleaning, not an extra guessed dose or another automatic backwash.

If D.E. appears in the pool, stop/restrict according to severity and refer for grids/elements, manifold, standpipe, air-bleed assembly, seals, valve, and internal fit evaluation. Do not add more D.E. to compensate.

15. Restore and close out

Restore automation, schedules, heater, sanitizer, cleaner, spa, features, and valves to the approved property state. Refill water only through an approved controlled method and trigger chemistry follow-up when material water replacement occurred.

Clean the weighing/slurry area without raising dust or creating runoff. Store filter aid in its original closed labeled packaging, separated from pool chemicals as the label/SDS requires.

Document spent-media disposal, exact product and weight added, final system state, and any restriction or assigned follow-up. If recharge could not be completed, leave the equipment deliberately controlled and clearly communicate that the filter is not ready for operation.

Common problems

Treating backwash as complete without recharge

The coating is required for operation. Measure, add, verify, and record it before closing the task.

Using a universal “80 percent” recharge rule

Manufacturers and models differ. Use the exact current model instruction and recorded weight.

Measuring with an unverified scoop or coffee can

Packing, product density, moisture, and container size change volume. Your company controls by net weight.

Pouring dry D.E. into the skimmer

Dry transfer can create dust and clumps. Follow the exact slurry/feed method and SDS controls.

Assuming D.E. is harmless because it is “natural”

Filter-aid dust requires hazard communication and exposure control. Read the exact label/SDS and avoid airborne powder.

Moving the valve while the pump runs

Stop and verify flow ceases before every position change.

Sending waste to a yard or storm drain

Backwash and spent D.E. require an approved route. Trace the endpoint; never infer it.

Adding more media when it returns to the pool

Media return suggests a containment-path defect. More product worsens the release and does not repair it.

Repeating backwash for short cycles

Recurring pressure rise may require element cleaning, contamination diagnosis, pool-load correction, or internal repair.

Major stop conditions

Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.

  • Pump/restart control, filter pressure relief, valve movement, separation-tank service, or discharge cannot be performed safely and exactly.
  • The filter, valve, separation tank, closure, gauge, air relief, grid/manifold history, pipe, hose, or discharge route is damaged, blocked, unstable, leaking dangerously, or of uncertain state.
  • The selected filter aid is unlabeled, damp/contaminated, transferred to an unknown container, incompatible, lacks a current SDS, or exposure controls/PPE cannot be met.
  • The pump loses prime/runs dry, pressure behaves abnormally, air cannot be purged, the waste port leaks in FILTER, or the filter cannot be recharged immediately and kept under responsible control.
