Visible Algae or Repeated Algae Growth
Restrict use when needed, confirm that the growth is algae-like, remove the biomass, restore CYA-aware sanitation, and find out why it came back.
Diagnostic path
Classify the observed pattern, then use the detailed guide before changing the system.
Work through the path
- Visibility is impaired: no use; follow Cloudy Water while treating the confirmed growth.
- A spot is colored but does not brush or release: stop calling it algae; evaluate stain, scale, pigment or surface damage.
- Growth brushes into a cloud or feels slimy: document it, restrict use, validate sanitizer/pH/CYA and start the approved recovery path.
- Chlorine reads zero after a large recent dose: rule out DPD bleach-out before adding more.
- Sanitizer is currently normal: determine whether a recent manual dose masks failed routine delivery or whether protected reservoirs remain.
- Growth returns in the same location: inspect local flow, shade, surface porosity/damage and the nearest cover, feature, cleaner or fitting reservoir.
- Growth returns across the pool or spa: reconstruct time below target, product delivery, CYA, demand, filter/circulation and dilution.
- Contamination or unknown slime is possible: stop routine algae treatment and use the contamination/qualified response.
Done when
- The algae-like condition is documented and separated from metal color, pollen, scale, stain, debris, biofilm, or contamination as far as field evidence permits.
- The sanitizer/delivery/circulation failure and protected reservoirs are corrected through approved procedures, and dead/loosened material is physically removed.
Visible algae means sanitation, circulation, physical cleaning or all three failed long enough for growth to establish. Repeated algae means the reason it established was never fully removed.
The recovery is not “make the water blue.” It is: restrict use, validate chemistry, restore the approved sanitizer exposure, expose attached growth, circulate and filter, physically remove the material, clean its reservoirs, and prove the residual holds after normal operation resumes.
Fast decision
- Visibility is impaired: no use; follow Cloudy Water while treating the confirmed growth.

- Contamination or unknown slime is possible: stop routine algae treatment and use the contamination/qualified response.
Step 1: restrict use and screen for a different emergency
Keep people and pets out when visible growth/slime is present, while recovery chemistry is outside use limits, or until all reopening criteria are verified.
Immediately separate:
- fecal material, vomit or blood;
- dead animal;
- sewage or runoff;
- illness report;
- chemical spill or fumes;
- unknown growth or residue;
- cloudy water obscuring the floor or suction fittings.
These require their specific response. Do not vacuum fecal material into the circulation/filter system and call it algae removal.
Step 2: preserve the field pattern
Before brushing or dosing, record:
- full-pool-or-spa and close-up photos with a location reference;
- color, texture and whether material is attached, floating, settled or suspended;
- exact walls, floor, corners, steps, grout, returns, skimmer throat, cover, cleaner, feature or spa location;
- sun/shade, depth, local return flow and temperature;
- water clarity and visible-depth target;
- whether the surface feels slippery from a safe deck-reachable location;
- first observation, last known clear condition and prior recurrence.
Use a surface-compatible brush on a small accessible test area. Record whether material releases as a cloud, smears, remains fixed, reveals discoloration beneath, or damages the surface.
Do not identify “green,” “mustard/yellow,” or “black” algae species from color alone. Metals, pollen, scale, dirt, pigment and surface defects can look similar. Aggressive treatment of the wrong condition can stain or damage the finish.
Step 3: validate the sanitation state
Test:
- FC, TC and CC with a method/range appropriate to the expected concentration;
- pH;
- CYA;
- temperature;
- TA, CH, salt and complete balance;
- alternate/high-range chlorine when bleach-out or recent treatment is possible.
CDC warns that chlorine above 10 ppm can bleach a DPD result. A flash-and-clear zero after treatment may mean extremely high chlorine, not no chlorine.
Record the approved FC target for the verified CYA and service/recovery condition. A generic minimum is not a recovery plan.
A normal snapshot does not erase the failure
If FC is now in range, ask:
- Was chlorine just manually added?
- Did the generator/feeder fail before the visit?
- Was the pool below target between weekly services?
- Is the current result a return-plume sample?
- Did a cover or schedule just change?
- Is growth protected from circulation or sanitizer?
The relevant exposure is the residual over time, not one sample after correction.
Step 4: find why sanitation failed
Insufficient delivery
Inspect and record:
- manual product amount, strength, application and inventory;
- trichlor/dichlor feeder identity, contents, setting and flow;
- salt-cell output, runtime, flow, salt, temperature, scale, cell life and alarms;
- liquid feeder tank, command, setpoint, flow interlock and inventory without opening unsafe chemical plumbing;
- automation schedules, spa mode, cover integration, outages and homeowner changes.
Use Chlorine Reading Is Unexpectedly Low or High for the full delivery/demand/dilution path.
Demand exceeded delivery
Look for:
- heavy use, sunscreen, sweat, pets and parties;
- leaves, pollen, flowers, ash, soil, fertilizer or construction debris;
- heat, sunlight, warm spa water, aeration and features;
- contamination or biofilm;
- dirty filter, cleaner, cover or feature reservoir;
- a large untreated physical load.
Dilution or chemistry context changed
Review:
- rain and overflow;
- leak and autofill;
- backwash, drain/refill, splash-out or vacuum-to-waste;
- source-water chemistry;
- CYA loss or excess;
- pH outside the approved range.
Circulation did not reach the area
Check:
- water level, baskets and pump prime;
- valve positions, schedule, speed and return distribution;
- cleaner operation;
- dead zones behind steps, benches, ladders, features and covers;
- connected/isolated spa behavior;
- filter pressure versus clean baseline and filter condition.
Do not assume longer pump runtime fixes a blocked line, wrong valve, air leak, failed impeller or damaged filter.
Step 5: approve the recovery product and target
Only use a product for sanitation or algae control when its actual label supports that purpose.
EPA explains that algae-control and microorganism claims are pesticide claims. A product marketed as “shock” or an oxidizer can be neither a sanitizer nor an algicide. Confirm:
- EPA registration when the claim requires it;
- active ingredient and available strength;
- intended pool or spa/surface use;
- dose and volume;
- pH and CYA conditions;
- application and circulation method;
- incompatible products and spacing;
- reentry/use restriction;
- effect on CYA, CH, metals, salt and balance;
- label/SDS PPE and storage/handling.
Do not choose a copper-based or other metal-containing algaecide without documenting stain, surface, equipment and water-balance risk. Do not mix chlorine types or add product to unknown feeder remnants.
Your company's exact recovery concentration, hold time, and treatment cap require technical review. Until they are approved for the property, escalate rather than inventing a “shock level.”
Step 6: expose attached growth
Sanitizer must contact the growth. Use the approved surface-compatible brush to work:
- walls and floor;
- corners and coves;
- steps, benches and ledges;
- tile/grout and skimmer throats;
- around accessible returns, lights and fittings without removal;
- cover water-contact surfaces under its procedure;
- cleaner body, bag/canister, hose and wheels;
- accessible feature and spa surfaces.
Do not use a stainless-steel or aggressive brush on vinyl, fiberglass, painted, delicate tile, soft/new plaster or an unknown finish. Do not enter unsafe/cloudy water or remove submerged electrical/suction components.
Brush in a controlled sequence so loosened material moves toward circulation and removal rather than settling in completed areas.
Step 7: circulate, filter and physically remove
Dead or loosened algae remains a contaminant load. It must be filtered or vacuumed/removed.
Verify:
- pump prime, return distribution and authorized recovery schedule;
- filter pressure against clean baseline;
- exact filter cleaning/backwash threshold;
- waste/discharge authorization when applicable;
- baskets and cleaner are checked frequently enough for the load;
- vacuum method does not bypass unsafe material or return it to the pool;
- visibility trend is improving.
Never open a pressurized filter. A rapid pressure rise may mean the filter is capturing the recovery load; no pressure change with persistent cloudiness may mean low flow or bypass. Use the equipment-specific diagnostic.
Step 8: clean the reservoirs
Repeated growth often survives in water-contact items or protected zones:
- filter media/elements and tank surfaces under the exact service procedure;
- cleaner, hose, bag, canister, tracks/wheels and storage caddy;
- automatic-cover water-contact surface and housing under its approved procedure;
- skimmer baskets, pump basket and leaf canister;
- brushes, nets, poles and vacuum equipment;
- spa jets/lines and water features;
- removable toys, floats and accessories assigned to the property;
- ladders, rails and fittings only through an authorized service method.
Do not move contaminated tools to another property. Clean/decontaminate or isolate them under the approved tool procedure before reuse.
Step 9: monitor recovery as a system
At each defined interval, record:
- FC/TC/CC and pH with valid high-range methods as needed;
- CYA and temperature context;
- visible growth and brush-release response;
- water clarity against the same target;
- filter pressure, pump state and material removed;
- product additions, times and predicted versus measured response;
- affected reservoirs cleaned;
- cover, spa and feature state.
Do not add the next dose simply because a calendar interval passed. Compare actual sanitizer demand and label/plan limits.
Repeated-growth root-cause audit
When algae returns, reconstruct the period since the last recovery.
Returns in the same spots
Investigate:
- weak local circulation;
- shade or warmer microclimate;
- missed brushing;
- porous, etched, cracked or damaged surface;
- nearby feature, cover, cleaner or fitting reservoir;
- material that was stain/scale rather than algae;
- incomplete original removal.
Returns across the pool
Investigate:
- sanitizer below target before the next service;
- undersized/failed delivery, schedule or runtime;
- high or changing CYA;
- invalid testing or DPD bleach-out;
- leak/refill or major weather/use event;
- ongoing debris/nutrient load;
- filter/circulation failure;
- homeowner or vendor product changes.
Returns after the cover closes or a feature runs
Inspect the water-contact surfaces and automation state. A clean pool can be reseeded by a dirty cover, feature, spa, cleaner or shared tool.
“Phosphates caused it”
Phosphate can be one nutrient in a complex system, but a phosphate result does not replace the sanitation/circulation diagnosis. Prove and correct the period below sanitizer target, biomass, hydraulics, filtration and reservoirs first. Any nutrient-treatment product needs a justified test, exact label and filter-removal plan.
Reopening and prevention
Do not reopen until:
- no visible or brush-released growth remains;
- floor, drains, steps, ledges and submerged-person zone are clearly visible;
- sanitizer and pH meet the approved use criteria and are within valid test range;
- CYA and full balance support the operating plan;
- filter/circulation equipment operates normally;
- recovery products meet their label reentry conditions;
- no contamination or unresolved surface/equipment hazard remains.
Then establish:
- CYA-aware weekly departure and minimum residual strategy;
- sanitizer delivery/runtime and cover-aware program;
- brushing map for prior hotspots;
- filter and cleaner inspection interval;
- debris and weather response;
- reservoir cleaning responsibility;
- a normal-operation follow-up after the pool returns to its ordinary schedule.
Common diagnostic mistakes
- Calling every colored spot algae: fixed stains, scale and surface defects need another path.
- Treating color instead of sanitation: blue water can still contain growth or unsafe residual.
- Adding more chlorine to a bleached-out test: the true level may already be extremely high.
- Using “shock” as a product category: the label may describe only oxidation, not sanitation or algae control.
- Skipping brushing: attached growth and slime can remain protected from bulk water treatment.
- Skipping removal: dead biomass consumes capacity and clouds/loads the system.
- Ignoring CYA: the same FC reading does not mean the same treatment context.
- Cleaning the pool but not the cleaner/cover/filter/tools: reservoirs can restart growth.
- Repeating the same dose after recurrence: recurrence is evidence to audit the whole interval.
- Reopening before normal-operation verification: a recent dose can temporarily mask a failed delivery system.
Completion standard
This diagnostic is complete when:
- the condition is documented and reasonably separated from its look-alikes;
- sanitizer, pH, CYA, delivery, demand, dilution, circulation and filtration are validated;
- the approved label-directed recovery, brushing, filtration and physical removal sequence is complete;
- accessible reservoirs and property tools are cleaned or isolated;
- no visible/brush-released growth remains and clarity/chemistry/equipment meet complete use criteria;
- sanitizer holds through the defined observation and normal-operation follow-up;
- any surface, equipment, contamination or recurring-cause escalation has an owner and date.
Major stop conditions
Stop the task, leave the system safe, and escalate when any of these conditions apply.
- Fecal material, vomit, blood, dead animal, sewage, illness report, hazardous runoff, chemical spill, strong fumes, or an unknown biological/chemical substance is present.
- A product is not EPA-registered/labeled for the intended sanitizer or algae-control claim, products or feeder remnants are unknown/incompatible, or an application/removal sequence is not approved.
- The filter, pump, heater, feeder, salt cell, valve, cleaner, cover, electrical component, or plumbing is leaking, damaged, pressurized with trapped air, or outside safe operating instructions.
- Treatment would require entering cloudy/unsafe water, opening pressurized equipment, removing submerged fittings, handling unknown contamination, electrical work, discharge, or work beyond technician scope.
