How long does a drain and refill take?

Draining typically takes 8-12 hours for an average residential pool. Refilling takes another 12-24 hours depending on water pressure. The full process, including chemical startup, usually spans 2-3 days.

Is draining my pool risky?

Yes. Draining carries real structural risks including hydrostatic uplift (the pool being pushed out of the ground by groundwater), shell cracking, and surface damage. We assess conditions before proceeding, but these risks cannot be fully eliminated. A signed risk acknowledgment is required.

How often should pool water be replaced?

Most pools in San Diego benefit from a drain and refill every 3-5 years, or when TDS exceeds 2,000+ ppm or CYA exceeds 100 ppm. Regular maintenance can extend this interval significantly.

Can you do a partial drain instead?

Yes. A partial drain (draining 1/3 to 1/2 of the water and refilling) can reduce CYA and TDS levels without the structural risks of a full drain. We will recommend the best approach based on your water chemistry.

When You Need a Drain and Refill

Draining is not routine. It is only recommended when water chemistry problems cannot be fixed by treatment alone.

High TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)

When TDS exceeds 2,000-3,000 ppm, chemicals become less effective and the water feels stale. Fresh water resets the baseline.

Excessive CYA (Stabilizer/Cyanuric Acid)

CYA above 100 ppm blocks chlorine from working properly. The only fix is dilution through partial or full drain.

Calcium Hardness Over 600 ppm

San Diego's hard water causes calcium buildup over time. Scaling on tile, plaster, and equipment signals it is time for fresh water.

Major Contamination

After sewage backflow, chemical spills, or other contamination events where treatment alone cannot make the water safe.

Pre-Drain Assessment

We test water chemistry, check for groundwater conditions, and inspect hydrostatic relief valves if present.

Controlled Drain

For BlueLux-managed drain work, we set up the discharge and provide refill instructions. The homeowner monitors the refill; BlueLux does not remain on-site solely to wait for filling.

Surface Review

Surface cleaning and stain treatment are not included. We document visible concerns and can provide a separate quote when appropriate.

Refill & Startup

Fresh water fill, followed by complete chemical startup: chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium, CYA, and salt (if applicable).

One planned partial exchange with pre-test, pump/discharge setup, refill instructions, post-refill test, normal rebalance chemicals, and restart verification, followed by chemical rebalancing.

BlueLux-Managed Pool Drain & Startup

BlueLux-managed draining, restart, and normal chemical balancing. The homeowner supplies water, monitors the refill, and pays water costs. Surface cleaning is separate.

Customer-Managed Pool Refill Startup

Staged startup chemistry and follow-up after you or another provider has already drained and refilled the pool.

Above-Ground Spa Drain, Clean & Refill

$250 plan / $350 standalone

Above-ground portable spa only. Attached pool spas, swim spas, contamination remediation, repairs, replacement filters, and unlawful discharge are excluded.

Important: Structural Risk Disclosure

Draining a swimming pool introduces inherent structural risks that are beyond the control of any service provider. By authorizing a drain and refill, the homeowner acknowledges and accepts the following risks:

Hydrostatic uplift ("pool pop"): Groundwater pressure beneath the empty pool shell can push upward with enough force to lift the entire pool structure out of the ground, causing catastrophic and often irreparable damage. This risk is elevated after rain, in areas near the coast, or in locations with a high water table.
Shell cracking and structural shifting: The weight of pool water provides counter-pressure against the surrounding soil. Without it, soil movement or settling can cause cracks in the pool shell, deck, or coping.
Surface damage: Plaster, pebble, or aggregate finishes can crack, delaminate, or discolor when exposed to air and direct sunlight during the drain period.

BlueLux is not liable for hydrostatic uplift, structural damage, shell cracking, surface delamination, or any other damage resulting from draining the pool. These are pre-existing site conditions and inherent risks of the draining process. A signed structural risk acknowledgment is required before any drain work begins.

We take every reasonable precaution to minimize risk, including assessing groundwater conditions, checking hydrostatic relief valves, and minimizing the duration the pool remains empty. However, no service provider can eliminate these risks entirely. See our Service Agreement for complete terms.
