Safety Guide

Emergency Response

Stay calm. Act fast. Call for help.

In an emergency, call first

If you are unsure

STOP. MOVE AWAY. CALL.

For any serious reaction, call 911 first, then start first aid.

Chemical in the eyes

  1. 1Rinse the eye gently with clean water for 15 to 20 minutes.
  2. 2Hold the eyelid open and roll the eye so water reaches every part.
  3. 3Remove contact lenses after the first few minutes if they come out easily.
  4. 4Keep rinsing on the way to help. Call Poison Control.

Call 911 if vision is lost, the eye was hit with acid or chlorine, or pain is severe.

Chemical on the skin

  1. 1Take off contaminated clothing, shoes, and watch right away.
  2. 2Rinse the skin with plenty of water for 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. 3Do not scrub or apply creams or ointments.
  4. 4Call Poison Control if the skin burns, blisters, or stays irritated.

Call 911 for large burns, deep burns, or burns to the face.

Breathed in fumes or gas

  1. 1Get the person to fresh air immediately. Move upwind.
  2. 2Keep them calm, seated upright, and resting.
  3. 3Loosen tight clothing around the neck and chest.
  4. 4Call Poison Control. Watch breathing closely.

Call 911 first if breathing is hard, the person is coughing badly, or chlorine gas was released.

Swallowed a chemical

  1. 1Do not induce vomiting unless Poison Control tells you to.
  2. 2Rinse the mouth with water.
  3. 3If the person is awake and able to swallow, give small sips of water.
  4. 4Never give anything by mouth to someone who is drowsy or unconscious.

Call 911 if the person is unconscious, having a seizure, or struggling to breathe.

Accidental mix or gas cloud

  1. 1Stop. Do not try to clean it up or separate the chemicals.
  2. 2Leave the area at once and move upwind into fresh air.
  3. 3Keep everyone, including the customer and pets, well clear.
  4. 4From a safe distance, call 911 if gas was released or anyone was exposed, then call the office.

Acid plus chlorine makes toxic chlorine gas. Treat any chemical cloud as a 911 emergency.

Spill (no one exposed)

  1. 1Keep people and pets away from the spill.
  2. 2If safe, stand the container up and stop the source.
  3. 3Do not mix the spill with any other chemical. Do not return spilled product to its container.
  4. 4Contain liquids away from drains. Keep dry products dry. Call the office to report.
