Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from ultraviolet breakdown. Too much reduces the active share of chlorine, so an ordinary free-chlorine reading no longer tells the full story.

What is Cyanuric Acid?
CYA binds with chlorine and slows ultraviolet breakdown. It does not evaporate. If you keep feeding stabilized tablets, the CYA left behind accumulates until water leaves through backwashing, splash-out, draining, or treatment.
Appropriate CYA Levels
For an established outdoor residential pool, BlueLux commonly starts with 30–50 ppm CYA when that range fits the sanitizer, finish, and installed equipment. That is a planning band, not a universal release standard.

Some systems specify a different range. Salt-cell requirements are model-specific even though a generator still produces chlorine. Effects of High CYA Levels
Reduced Chlorine Effectiveness
CYA protects chlorine and also reduces the active fraction. As CYA climbs:
- The same 2 ppm free-chlorine reading does less sanitizing work.
- The required free-chlorine target rises with the CYA level.
The CDC Model Aquatic Health Code warns that CYA slows chlorine disinfection. It governs public aquatic venues, not every backyard pool, but the chemistry does not change at the property line: when CYA is excessive, confirm the reading and lower it rather than relying on an ordinary chlorine target.

High CYA itself is not usually what makes eyes sting. The trouble comes from the chemistry needed to compensate and from water that slips out of control:
- More sanitizer is needed to maintain an adequate active-chlorine level.
- If sanitation falls behind, combined chlorine and other irritants can build.

Solutions to High CYA Levels
Dilution
Dilution is the most straightforward method to reduce high CYA levels. This involves:

Systematic Water Replacement: Regularly replacing small amounts of pool water over time can gradually reduce CYA levels.
For a planning estimate when the fill water contains no CYA:
Replacement fraction = 1 − (target CYA ÷ current CYA)
If a confirmed result is 100 ppm and the target is 50 ppm, the ideal mathematical estimate is a 50% replacement. That is not permission to drain a pool halfway. Groundwater, the pool structure, the finish, weather, discharge rules, and source-water chemistry still determine whether one exchange, staged exchanges, or RO is appropriate.

Reverse Osmosis
