A white ridge at the waterline is often calcium carbonate left behind as pool water evaporates, though inspection and testing may be needed to distinguish scale from other residue. Waterfalls, spillways, and porous artificial rock are common places to find it. As deposits thicken, removal becomes harder and more likely to damage a delicate finish. The underlying issue is usually water balance, not surface dirt alone.

Understanding Calcium Build-Up

What Is It?

Scale is calcium carbonate that has come out of solution and hardened on a surface. Fresh deposits may look like a pale haze. Older scale feels gritty, turns gray, and can lock into grout or stone.

Why Waterfalls and Tiles?

These spots stay wet, then dry, over and over. The water disappears; the minerals do not. A rough rock face also gives the crystals more places to grab than smooth plaster does.

The Chemistry Behind It

Role of Water Balance

No single test result tells the whole story. Scale forms when the combined balance of calcium, pH, alkalinity, temperature, and dissolved solids pushes the water toward precipitation.

  • Calcium Hardness: Ideally, calcium hardness should be between 150–300 ppm for pools. Higher levels increase the risk of scaling as the water becomes overly saturated with calcium.

  • pH Levels: A high pH level (above 7.8) encourages calcium to precipitate out of the water because higher pH levels reduce the solubility of calcium carbonate.

  • Total Alkalinity: Proper alkalinity (80-120 ppm) stabilizes pH. High alkalinity alongside high pH accelerates calcium precipitation.

When several of those readings run high at once, calcium starts landing on the pool instead of staying in the water. Test pH and alkalinity weekly, and check calcium often enough to see the trend rather than one isolated number. You usually manage that rise with pH and alkalinity control until dilution becomes necessary.

  • Record the trend rather than reacting to one test.

  • Inspect splash zones where a new deposit will appear first.
