Should Kids Leave Floaties and Toys in the Pool? What Pool Owners Need to Know

Pool toys should come out of the water after swimming. Loose toys can drift into skimmers, interfere with cleaners, deteriorate in sunlight and chlorinated water, and—most seriously—attract young children back toward the pool.

Leaving items in the pool can unintentionally obstruct your filtration system and even damage equipment:

• Blocked Skimmers and Filters: Floaties and goggles can drift into skimmers or block pool drains, reducing circulation and filtration efficiency.
• Interference with Automatic Cleaners: Toys can obstruct the movement of automatic pool cleaners, preventing them from doing their job. They might even get tangled in the machinery, necessitating repairs.

A toy pressed across the skimmer mouth can starve pool circulation. A string or strap wrapped around a cleaner can stop it cold. Neither failure is dramatic—until the pump loses prime or the cleaner needs a repair.

Safety Considerations

From a safety perspective, keeping the pool clear of toys helps minimize risks:

• Tripping Hazards: Toys left on the pool deck can become slipping hazards.
• Drowning Risks: Larger toys in the water might obscure visibility or create barriers, especially for younger children.

• Degradation in Sun and Chlorine: Pool toys exposed to the sun and chlorinated water can gradually degrade, contributing to microplastic pollution.
